Made the short journey to the other side of the Tatras mountains and arrived at Tatranska Lomnica ready for some serious mountain trekking. After about three passes through the town trying to find a campsite and being a split second away from passing on the place completely, we decided to stay for one night at what we first thought was a pretty dodgy looking campsite. Ended up there for about a week and Tatranska turned out to be one of our favourite places visited so far. A ski resort in the winter, it still seemed to maintain a kind of après ski feel and with some fantastic trekking in the mountains. The first couple of days we were trekking mainly in the clouds but this only added to the experience making for quite an eery atmosphere, especially going through the woods and arriving at a spectacular waterfall. Also managed a peak of 2030m with a bit of scrambling and pulling ourselves up on ropes attached to the rocks in places, despite only having about 10-15m visibility. Towards the top we enjoyed our first snow of the season and were particularly impressed with the snowman that some hikers before us had left at the summit!
Another intresting experience was arriving at an opening in the woods on one trek, seemingly alone and isolated in the middle of nowhere, to see a small wooden hut fade into view out of the cloud. Although sign-posted as a museum, on opening the door we were shocked to find a tiny pub, bustling with life and a log fire with some bizarre memorabilia on the walls the only vague resemblence to a museum. Naturally we took the opportunity to sample some of the local Slovakian spirit 'Demonovka'!
After a day waiting for the cloud to clear spent relaxing at the thermal baths in Poprad, we finally awoke to clear skies. Took the cable car to the summit of Lomnicsky Stit which at about 2700m is the second highest peak in the Tatras. We were both lost for words arriving at the top with breathtaking views looking down on the clouds and other peaks across the range.
Items Abi has lost/ forgotten:
One memory card (pulled camera out of bag whilst standing on a wooden bridge at 1800m memory card fell out of bag and fell down the tiniest crack into a small lake. Impossible to retrive but thankfully it didn't have any pictures on!)
Items Dave has broken: one heater (dropped an entire cup of tea into the top of it! Luckily saveable after dismantling and drying out!)
