Sorry. I have to continue my rant about Italian drivers. My self esteem and driving prowess sunk to an all time low in Pompeii when I was ruthlessly cut up by a nun! The worst thing is she knew exactly what she was doing as we saw her grin on noticing us in fits of hysterics at what had just happened!
Pompeii and Herculaneum were both incredible and unbelievably well preserved after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the first centry AD (Herculaneum in particular). We spent a day at each and could scarsely believe some of the detail in the buildings and mosaics that had lain unchanged for 2 thousand years. There were Roman baths, temples, houses, a brothel and even snack bars which we assumed to be the Roman equivalent of McDonalds! Also the plaster casts of victims that had been trapped by the lava, showing pained expressions and people covering their eyes in their dying moments, were a little chilling but brought home the reality of the tragedy a little.
We also spent a day in Sorrento which is quite a nice seaside town just up the coast from Pompeii....it rained....we got wet again!
Scores in the 'spotting a car without a dent in it' game so far:
