Spent the day in Lourdes (was hoping to get my toe nail cured but it seems there may be people with more deserving problems...it's a fair cop!) Not being Catholic we were both a little unsure of what to expect and I admit that I was a little sceptical of a place based largely around the story of a small girl who saw 14 visitations of the virgin Mary, where you can buy rosery beads from Market vendors and little plastic bottles in the shape of Mary in which to take home a sample of Holy Water. It was however, very hard not to be drawn into the atmosphere of hope and anticipation. Before you knew it we were in the cave, gazing at the virgin Mary (not the real one obviously!) and drinking the Holy Water, in our defence we were really thirsty and it was free, this appealed to my Northern roots!
