Arrived at our campsite by lake Tekapo had a great view of the lake and shared a beer with our Kiwi neighbours (think they had had a headstart on us). They offered us some grubs but as they were still moving and looked like pale slugs we declined.
The next day went for a walk up Cowans Hill and then down and around the lake, we hardly saw another person. We did bump into a couple who asked us to take their photo as they had got married by the lake the day before. Deffinately a beautiful location. The statue of a sheep dog and the church of the good shepherd on the other hand were surrounded by chinese tourists. We did managed to sneak in to take one photo before they carried on their poses. Back in town a siren was going it sounded like an air raid siren but it was in fact calling the part-time firemen to the station. Impressive to watch all these people arriving by car and in no time leaving in the engine. Can't have been anything too bad as it returned in aout 5 minutes though.
Then we drove up to Mount Cook. We saw our first sight of the mountian across Lake Pukaki a very blue lake and a very formiddable looking mountain. Then of course we had to go to the doctors in the town of Twizel but for a change good news told if no more pain no more visits to doctors. He also confirmed the fact that the gause stuck up Keeley's finger from the last visit to the hospital was actually causing more pain than helping. From Twizel it was a short drive to Mount Cook with more impressive views as we got closer. The camp site was right in the shadows of the mountains. We set of straight away on the Hooker Valley track a little worried we would not make it back before dark. Had to cross two swing bridges Keeley managed to negioate the bridges with out much problems. The walk ended right at the foot of the mountian it looked like a chocolate box mountain.
It was a different type of camping experience this time as the Keas were everywhere at night trying to break into the tents. In the morning the Keas were all over our van making sure we did not sleep in. An early start along the road and the road kill was everywhere most of it being eaten by hawks. We stopped at Elephant Rocks the setting for Narnia it was like a giant playground had great fun jumping around. You could easily imagine all the characters standing high up on the rocks.
Off back to the coast in search of more penguins.
