Dads now converted to Subway's we destroyed 2 foot long steak and cheese ones last night. Emily woke me up at midnight with a video call... It was great to see them all.
I set the alarm for 6 but dads insomnia beat the alarm. We made the ferry to Alert Bay on Cormorant island with plenty of time to spare.
Alert bay has a proud 1st nation heritage and we visited the museum. It was interesting. We were shown a video explaining how the White man had come and taken away their culture and way of life. It was touching and almost made me want to buy one of the totally overpriced carvings they had for sale. Now when I see a native, usually in a massive jeep/truck towing a trailer with boats/quads I feel for their loss.
The museum also had a guest exhibit from Germany this must have been of immense value as they had 2 guards watching over things. When I say watching, I mean one was texting on his mobile and the other played on his PSP. Both exhibits were impressive in their own ways the German one was old weapons, armour and Jewellery with excellent craftwork and attention to detail. The first nations gear was all colourful masks, clothing and tools. No photography allowed
We moved on to view the rest of the island to see the 'Worlds largest totem pole'. It's tall!
The other place we were told to visit was ..... The grave yard? We went and saw graves with carvings for headstones, they were similar to the overpriced ones in the museum. Dads best quote of the day was "why pay a fortune for a carving in the museum when we could have just helped ourselves in the graveyard!" we didn't though.
Back to the ferry, next stop is Sointula on Malcolm island.
