We have to wake the kids again, to get up and go to Versailles to see Le Chateau. They are not very impressed, and we promise them a day off tomorrow.
We catch a train as close as we can get after the train accident a few days ago, the line is closed.
Today is a national holiday and le Chateau hosts a family picnic, and the French dress in white for the occasion.
I'm glad we couldn't get to the stop we wanted as we would have missed the farmers market in Versailles had we come in the other way. We pick up fresh roasted chickens, Brie, baguette, hummus and breadsticks, fresh berries for dessert. Definitely stopping here for supplies to take home.
We arrived at about 10.30 and way too late. There are about 100 buses parked out front, and a line mile long, all on a very warm day.
We make the decision just to go to the gardens instead of lining up for le Chateau. Disappointing, but the kids were more looking for ward to the gardens and the fountain shows anyway.
The gardens are spectacular, the picnic great, the weather beautiful, fountains come alive just after we got there. People are rowing in the lake, we walk the best part of the gardens after our lunch, the French seem to love the occasion, all dressed in white, carrying wicker baskets.
By three o'clock we are all really tired and go to see if there is still a line up out the front, and there is, and it's about 28 degrees, so we walk back through Versailles, unfortunately the markets are gone, all packed up, so we catch a train back to Paris, and collect food supplies on the way up our street, including some delicious looking petite desserts.
Tonight is early dinner at home, chicken, ham, salads, cheese and baguette, and red wine, and don't forget dessert. Tomorrow we have promised the kids a sleep in and a day of from touristy stuff...............we'll see....
