The day started with a slightly strange breakfast in the hotel (couldn't tell what was sweet and what was savoury - rolls that looked similar but had either jam or cabbage and onion inside). We went down to Vladimir station to get the bus to Suzdal - a journey of about 35km. I managed to buy tickets with my 7 words of Russian and we found the bus. We met up with 2 other westerners - a Brit and an American both going to Suzdal. When we got to Suzdal, we all piled off the bus as it was supposed to be the end of the line - then told to get back on the bus by a friendly Russian as it was going from the bus station to the centre of town - it cost us another 8 Roubles (25p).Suzdal was the seat of the Orthodox church in the middle ages and had lots of well preserved churches, monasteries and a Kremlin (fortress). We spent the day going round the churches and monasteries etc. All were interesting but unfortunately all the explanations were in Russian (no concessions to foreigners here) - this made it a bit confusing. We managed to find the bus back o Vladimir OK. We then spent a brief 5 minutes trying to book a train back to Moscow tomorrow - used my 7 words of Russian and some sign language but got a lot of Russian back, smiles and giggles at my blank look. Apparently you couldn't buy the tickets until tomorrow - so much for my Russian. We adjourned to the local shopping centre to get something to eat for dinner. We have discovered the food courts, similar to English ones where we can eat quite cheaply good food, and see it before we order.
