The overnight train to Moscow was new but we were still in a 4 berth carriage with 2 other Russians. We were woken at 6:30 by Radio Moscow - the carriage attendants method of telling you we arrive in 30 minutes so get up!The trip to the hotel turned into a saga.We had to use the Metro as our hotel was a little bit out of town.First we could not find the Metro - the building marked as metro was the exit only.Eventually found it and got tickets, on first train and changed train to the right one.Got out at the right stop - so we thought- but the hotel complex we were staying at was nowhere to be seen. After standing in the rain and asking several people, found out we had missed our stop.We thought we had worked it out correctly, the technique was to check Russian name and also to count number of stops. It turned out we had done both correctly but the trains did not stop at one intermediatestation (being refurbished) and the station we wanted had been renamed because it was confused with the one we eventually got off at.The Muscovites are determined to confuse the tourists!!We checked into our hotel - it is on a complex with 3 other hotels each with upwards of 1000 rooms and thenback into the centre to look round and check out seeing the Kremlin. We were quite impressed with the centre - clean and not full of down and outs which we had expected. In fact, the place seems quite wealthy - lots of shops all full ofRussians spending money - it doesn't seem a poor place. The next day was scheduled to be exploring the Kremlin. We were a bit late getting going andcouldn't get a ticket to the armoury -the Russian treasury. We managed to buy a ticket to see the Kremlin and then ran round to the armoury joining the queue expecting to get thrown out but to our surprise managed to get in.The Armoury was amazing - lots of gold, silver pieces - some religious pieces others pure opulence. The jewelled horse bridle was definitely over the top - understand why there was a revolution. The highlight was the Faberge Easter eggs - my favourite was the one that contained a miniature clockwork train - working of course.Fran has decided what she wants for Easter. The rest of the Kremlin was a bit disappointing - churches were OK but it was bleak and cold.We stayed in town to see the city at night - it looks fabulous lit up but we were disappointed that we couldn't go into Red square as it was closed for some kind of event.GUM (the department store) was lit up as if its Christmas - well it is almost cold enough to be!
