We had an early start in Warsaw - up early out at 6:30 (4:30 UK!) to catch the train at 7:20. Found the platform OK and then Fran's priority - had to buy stuff for journey as there is no restaurant car on the train.The train was half empty - have a compartment to ourselves. It took a long time to clear Warsaw but eventually we are travelling through the countryside - nearly all forest with bits of farmland in between.We changed trains at the Lithuanian border (different rail gauge sizes) - then on to Vilnius. The Lithuanian train was a bit basic - basically a bit like an elderly commuter train.We arrived in Vilnius on time - first impression is that is seems to be being rebuilt. Dumped bags then found a Greek restaurant for dinner.

Leisurely start to the next day - breakfast then off to see Vilnius. We were staying in the centre so it was by foot. First it was down to the Cathedral - it seems like it's brand new but is still impressive (It had just been rebuilt - the palace that was next door was being rebuilt!). We then had a walk round the old town. Seemed like it was full of churches all having undergone a large amount of restoration. Certainly we reached 10 before lunchtime. Everywhere there seemed a great emphasis on the old history (pre WWII) and the post soviet times. In between was not talked about. We ended up at the train station trying to book onward tickets. The tourist information told us there were trains but the train station were emphatic - no trains go to Riga you need to go by bus. Eventually booked for 10:00 tomorrow - at least it will be a quick journey.In the afternoon, in addition to more churches, we went to the old castle which overlooks the city. The castle is very small but does have great views of all the churches!
