Too Cold For Penguins
Hi All!
We have just spent the last week in Cambodia after a hairy journey from Bangkok last weekend. The first few days were spent in Siem Reap where we visited the Temples of Angkor. Each temple is very different from the others and they are all beautiful in their own ways. The most famous is Angkor Wat and it is awesome to walk around it. The carvings in the stone are very detailed and the architecture is beautiful. One of our favourite temples is possibly one of the most ruined, Ta Phrom, but we found it stunning partly because of the huge tree roots sitting on top of the structure. It's very hot here and it can be hard going when you're climbing temples all day so it was only fair to sample the local beer afterwards. We've been a bit disappointed by the local food though so we're eating more western meals at the moment.
After Siem Reap we took a bus to Phnom Penh. We are staying in a dodgy bar near the riverfront frequented by pervy western blokes and local ladies, but the room is very nice and cheap so we stopped. They also have some extremely cute kittens. The plan was to stay 3 nights here before we move onto Vietnam but our visa has taken longer than we anticipated so we don't leave until tomorrow. We visited the killing fields of Choeng Ek and the Tuol Sleng museum, formerly the Khmer Rouge Prison. It is a very sad history and unbelievably recent, it's quite a reality check for the average westerner, and yet the people here are some of the friendliest we have met so far on our travels.
So off to Vietnam tomorrow. Hoping the food will get better!
Lots of love, Helen and Ben xxx
