Too Cold For Penguins
Hello!
We have been in Vietnam for the past week and loving every minute! It's such a friendly country, the food is great, the scenery is beautiful and the weather is good, there's nothing to dislike. We spent a few days in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and visited the Cu Chi Tunnels where Vietnamese villagers lived for years underground to avoid the bombing from the Americans. Even though a section of tunnel has been enlarged to accomodate tourists, Ben still nearly got stuck. They are very small and claustrophobic and there's 250Km of them in total! We also visited the Reunification Palace (very seventies) and the war museum to educate ourselves. They were preparing for the 30th Anniversary celebrations to mark the reunification of Vietnam at the end of the war in 1975 and there were decorations and flags everywhere.
We travelled to Da Lat in the Central Highlands for the weekend. It's a beautiful area in the mountains and much cooler than Saigon which was refreshing. We spent a day mooching around the area and visited the Cremalliere railway where we took the train to Trai Mat village and visited the pagoda there. We booked a trek for yesterday, listed in the tour flyer as 'Easy' and we're thinking of sueing under the trade descriptions act (not sure if it applies here). We ended up trekking up a bit of a hill (1700m high) and through jungle to a gorgeous lake where we had a picnic in the sunshine, then took a boat across the lake to a pagoda and then a cable car back towards the town. Just as we left the cable car a freak storm came on suddenly and we ended up stuck in the cable car station (better than in the cable car swinging around though) where we met a group of Vietnamese lads who couldn't speak a word of English but were trying to communicate with us. Bizarrely one of them took his 'Da Lat' t-shirt off and gave it to Ben as a gift. We had a great guide called Cu, and made a fab trekking pal called Katie who came out with us last night to sample the local grub.
Now in Nha Trang on the coast. Booked some diving for tomorrow, and then we leave for Hoi An on Wednesday for a few days.
Keep in touch!
Love H and B xxx
