Just realized that I haven't updated this blog for a month! Many things have happened since I visited the Namib Desert, so therefore I won't update you on everything that has happened all at once, as no one likes long posts!
We had the rental car for another 5 days after the desert. We drove through a beautiful landscape and went up north to Brandberg and Twyfelfontain to see the cave paintings and carvings. We stayed at a camp in Uis 3 nights; as that was more convenient than moving around with tents and s*** just to drive 30k. Brandberg is famous for a special cave painting called The White lady. I read about it before we went to Africa, so I was very excited to see this controversial painting. The White Lady was discovered by the Europeans in the 15th century. They claimed that there was a white lady among the black Africans painted on the rock and that that was a proof that the Europeans had been there 5000 years ago and showed the savages how to draw and dance. This naive discovery changed the whole evolution and it took many decades before we realized that the painting in fact was a black man, and the reason for his white legs was that they illustrated the smoke from the bonfire in front of him from a ritual; which also explained his decorated body. I found the cave paintings and carvings very fascinating and extraordinary. It was definitely worth the 45 min walk in 40 degrees.
After Twyfelfontain we said good bye to Andrew in Swakopmund and he returned the rental car in Windhoek. We stayed in Swakopmund for 2 weeks. The guide books were right when they described this town as "more German than Germany". Everyone spoke German; all street names were in German and the worst thing was that they thought We were German.
In New Germany we strolled around in the center, had coffees in the picturesque alleys, went for runs along the beach, visited the museum and just enjoyed ourselves. One day we went on a dolphin excursion. It was really nice and saw many dolphins, seals, pelicans and flamingos. We had lunch on the oat and I tried oysters. It was disgusting! Both myself and Sanna were too sea sick to eat anything which was a bummer as we had paid a lot for that excursion! Good thing was that we didn't puke up on anyone at least.
We stayed at Villa Wiese; a nice and cozy guest house with a rustic atmosphere similar to a chalet. It was a really lovely place and the breakfast was delicious. Those 2 weeks passed by real quick.
We took the Town Hopper mini bus back to Windhoek and stayed there over the weekend before we took the Intercape to Cape Town. That Saturday we went out with Christine and some friends of hers. To go out in a city where you don't know anyone is awesome. I didn't have to care one second about how foolish I look when I dance. I "moon walked", did my boogie moves and couples danced with Christine. If the floor wouldn't be so filthy from spilled drinks and puke I probably would have started break dancing; which btw is something I'm really not that good at. Well; according to myself at 3am I'm a true talent. We danced the night away and I noticed how the people around us started dancing just like Sanna and I. And it was great to see everyone laughing and enjoying themselves. It was a great night that finished at 6am with a beautiful Dirty Dancing lift (see picture)!
