Ok this morning we caught our extra posh bus to Singapore. It was more like an aeroplane, even had individual screens so Tom watched a film! When we got to customs at Singapore I had to have my small backpack searched after it went through the scanner. All the books in my bag must have looked like boxes of cigarettes as the man seemed convinced that I was trying to smuggle some into the country! How embarrassing. The journey took about 6 hours so when we arrived about half 3 we caught a taxi to Little India where we'd booked a hostel. Our first time in a dorm room and it wasn't the best way to start.I opened the door to our room and went in first. There were 3 sets of bunk beds against the wall and then only just enough room for two people to stand side by side between the beds and the other wall, not what you would call spacious! That wasn't the worst thing though. There was a guy asleep on one of the beds who looked, and smelt, like he had been there for at least a week!!!Also the room was boiling hot as the air con is switched off during the day!For these reasons we went straight back out.Got some tea at a food court then thought we'd better go back and do some laundry. Then came the next nasty shock… you have to do the laundry yourself!!!!!!!No more handing it over to a nice lady and paying per the kilogram, oh no.Now we have to pay about 4 times more just to use the bloody machines!!Back in our smelly room (not quite so smelly now as the man had gone out) we met a really nice German couple and Tom got to have a good chat about football, hes obviously been missing this!
Friday 9th Dec we set off into the city centre to have a look around. The place is so clean I've never seen anywhere like it!Can't believe how many shopping malls are around either and all the expensive shops, you can't turn around without seeing a Louis Vuitton or a Gucci shop!So just to put a dampener on the day I wasn't feeling well again. We went into a clinic in one of the shopping centre where I got some different antibiotics. This Doctor's diagnosis was e-coli and the cost of the consultation and the medication was considerably more than it was in Thailand! This afternoon we went to see the famous Raffles hotel and went into the Long Bar for a drink. The Singapore sling was $26 whoa!!So we decided not to go for that.I had a sprite and Tom had a beer.We made the most of the free nuts on the table and it was quite fun chucking the shells on the floor!Tom was horrified when we got the bill and his beer cost almost as much as a Singapore sling would have, oh dear! After these very expensive drinks we went back to the hostel and made instant noodles for tea!
Saturday began with a look around, you guessed it, another shopping mall! When we'd had enough of window shopping we took the monorail to Sentosa. There were a few small man made beaches and lots of cafes and eating places. After a look around we decided to take the cable cars back.Got a good view of Singapore and we got to stop off for free coffee and cake (although the coffee was black and the cake was one mouthful, not that I'm complaining!) before getting back on the cable cars to take us back to the city. This evening we got picked up to go to the night safari at Singapore zoo, on the bus we met a couple from America (she was originally from Yorkshire) who were really nice.We saw lions, tigers, elephants (including a baby), a crocodile, hippos, buffalo, hyena and I'm sure I'm forgetting loads!Walked through the bat enclosure, some of them were huge!
Sunday wasn't a great day, we had to check out ready for our flight to Adelaide in the evening.I was feeling really ill all day, probably as bad as its ever been.By the time we were at the airport I was shivering all over and had theseuncontrollable twitches in my face and neck, Tom did such a good job of not laughing at me but he says now that it was very hard not to!!It didn't get any better when we were on the plane and I was being sick again so the cabin crew called out to see if there was a doctor on board, what a nightmare!Luckily a really kind doctor came up, her name was Marion and she was English but living in New Zealand. They put us all in first class so I could lie down and she gave me some anti-sickness medication and made me drink loads of water.I also got a little bit of sleep, poor Tom stayed awake for the whole night to wake me up every hour to drink some more water as Marion instructed.About 6am they served breakfast in first class.Tom had a good breakfast and I just tried some toast.Well, it is a whole different world in first class!!The flight attendant came over, put a table cloth on our lap tables and gave us proper silver cutlery and real china! When we landed we were first off the plane (never done that before!), picked up our bags, had them sniffed by the security dog and then got a taxi straight to our hostel. As it was still only about 7.30am we dropped our bags off and went to the hospital which luckily wasn't too far away. They did some tests, put me on a drip for a few hours and then we went back to the hostel to sleep for the rest of the afternoon. That's pretty much all I did for the rest of the day was sleep!Tom went and had a drink in the hostel and met some people. When he came back we got the laptop out and discovered that the screen was cracked with black blobs all over it.Tom thinks it happened when his bag got squashed by the adjustable chair on the plane, damn first class!!Not good seeing as we've only had the laptop for 10 days. Not a good start to Australia, things can only get better!??...............
