Unfortunately, we only had one night in Delhi, as a stop over on our way to the back waters of Kerala in the South.
It seemed like there was a load of stuff to see and do, all of which we had to bypass to sit on the white sand beaches of Verkala . Shame…
Dubbed as, 'the dirtiest city in the world,' it made me wonder where Mumbai would rank in the table!?
Delhi looked very affluent and busy, where rich business card types earned millions of rupees while the poor street people shined their shoes.
We arrived late at night and took possibly the scariest rickshaw journey of our trip so far, to our hostel. The noisy main roads soon turned into thin and windy streets, full of markets and tourists.
We stayed in the Main Bazaar, where the back streets meandered all around high rise buildings, going on for miles and miles in all directions.
Roof top bars sold beer in coffee mugs and tea pots to get around the alcohol licencing laws. We enjoyed a nice cuppa kingfisher watching the mental movements below.
Our hostel was hidden in one of the meandering alleys heading away from the main bazaar. It had a very unique feature at the top of the alley, one which I think, and hope, I will never see again.
One side of this alley was a free, very public, and very leaky latrine, which didn't leave much to the imagination with totally open 'cubicles.'
A lovely treat for the eyes and nose.
Directly opposite to this, so close that the leaking fluids ran under the stall, was a man making and selling 'fresh' omelettes. It seemed an odd choice of position for someone to be cooking food; you queued for your food while dancing around the flowing rivers of human liquids beneath your feet.
Needless to say, at around 80 rupees, they were great value, and tasted delicious.
Delhi is definitely a place we would like to visit again when we have more time. Surprisingly to me it seemed much more interesting than Mumbai and, in my opinion, 'the second dirtiest city in the world,' behind Mumbai itself.
Peace and pissy flip flops
