We flew from Rio to Salvador. This was a cheaper option as the bus would take 20 hours more and cost roughly the same price. We even treated ourselves to an airport pick up which was nice as we arrived very late at night. We stayed at Barra Guest House for the first 4 nights, this hostel was nice but about $60US for the both of us. We met heaps of cool people here and ended up spending the rest of Carnaval with them. The first day we went to the local beach and it was amazing you could not see sand it was just umbrellas. Apparently over the weekend it gets like this as people who live close to Salvador come here all year round. I have never seen anything like it. There were cops everywhere, they were running though the crowds on the beach with their guns out looking for people. It was a pretty big eye opener. There were beer sellers again every few meters selling $2.50US for 3 really cold beers.
After the 4 nights we had to move to our arranged hostel which was in a different area called Pelourinho which is the old part of town. It was sad to leave Barra as we had so many mates in that area but it was great the deal we got with our hostel and we got our own room.
It was time to prepare for Carnaval.
More to come soon.
