Corumba
We had to stay 1 night in Corumba and wait for the next day to cross the border and catch the death train to Santa Cruz Bolivia. We crossed the border at about 11am knowing that the border shuts from 12 till 2pm and we didn't want to miss out on getting a ticket. There are three trains you can take which operate on various days. There is the most expensive and comfortable one and the medium price one which operate on alternate days and then the death train which is by far the cheapest but takes twice as long and stops about 32 times depending on the cargo it's taking. We have so far heard three reasons why it's called the death train so take your pick which one to believe.
Reason 1 : Some people say that it is because the ride is so long and bumpy a traveler wants to kill themselves.
Reason 2 : It is because of the amount of people who died building it.
Or reason 3 : And the more common TRAIN of thought (ha ha) is that it got its name from the time when the train used to transport bodies after a Yellow Fever epidemic. Up to you what you believe I guess.
Once we got there the actual death train was just leaving and the ticket booth was closed which probably wasn't such a bad thing as the seats on it looked to be like a park bench with a cushion. Probably not the best for 20 odd hours so we ended up getting the most expensive one because it just happened to be that trains day for travel. The train was sweet. It was $120 for the 12 hour trip and we were really comfy except for the constant rocking the whole way. We left 6 hours after the Death train and we ended up passing it when we were close to Santa Cruz.
