Left Bangkok in the early hours of the final day on our visa, and headed to Cambodia! After a long journey and a lot of passport stamping, we arrived in Siam Riep. Surprisingly pretty place! On our first day we headed to Angkor Wat which was breathtaking. Also lots of other local temples, including the one Angelina Jolie filmed Tomb Raider in. In the afternoon we went to a floating village, which included school, church, police station, pool hall etc! Saw a small boat being taken out by a bigger boat - actually sank along with it's two passengers! (although they came backup - see pictures!). Went to a cultural performace which was ok ..... but the food? WOW! All you can eat buffet. Brilliant.
Travelling on to Phnom Penh, met a lovely Swede boy who travelled through Cambodia with us. In Phnom Penh we visited the genocide museum S-21 and the Killing Fields which were pretty harrowing! Visited the riverside and the lake for a beautiful sunset.
The next day we headed down to Sinhoukville, where we found the most beautfiul beach in the whole of SE Asia BUDDY! Did lots of sunbathing, watched films, drank 25c beer and got annoyed by thousands of kids selling bracelets and random art on the beach! Also did beauty treatments, sold sunglasses, crabs etc.
Went back to Phnom Pehn then headed straight on to Saigon which was VERY BUSY! Did a couple of days trips: one to the Mekong Delta and one to the CuChi Tunnels, which was a bad idea as it was very small, narrow, dark and hot. We only managed to crawl 40m but it seemed like miles!
Got the bus to Dalat which is supposed to be the most popular honeymoon destination in Vietnam. Not sure why? Did a daytour of the city - the highlight was a rollarcoaster down to the bottom of a waterfall. The lowpoint was the Royal Palace which looked like a run-down 1950's dusty hotel. We spent approx. 3 minutes in there.
Next stop was Nha-trang where we went on a boat trip. This included a 'boy-band' performance (the Vietnamese crew singing in coconut bikinis), a floating bar and snorkelling. Had a couple of nights out there with people we met on the boat and then had an overnight bus trip to Hoi An.
This was our favourite place in Vietnam! Mainly because of the 200 tailor shops lining the streets. We spent far too much money on 'wardrobe investments' like suits, shoes, boots, coats and dresses. We also did a cooking school - well watched them make our lunch! It was delicious! Just before we left we posted everything to England which cost more than we've spent on accommodation in Asia so far!
On the way to Hanoi we stopped in Hue which was pretty uneventful, it just broke up the journey! Left Hanoi after 1 day as it was chaos and headed to Laos! Had the most horrific journey of our lives. We booked the bus on the understanding that it was the government bus: air-conditioned, taking 17 hours. In reality it was a half-full of boxes, but that didn't stop them putting the same number of people on. Being the last to arrive, children's plastic seats were placed in the aisle for us! Just what you need for an overnight bus journey.....which turned out to be 25 hours long! We broke down twice, had a 2 hour stop for an accident on a bridge, hit a large cow, had no toilet stops (apart from open fields) and no food stops until 22 hours into the journey. When we arrived in Vientiane there was a huge cheer and we found the nearest pizza place!
That bus wasn't enough for us, so we hopped on a minibus to Vang Vieng the next day - a short journey of only 4 hours. This is where we currently are. It is full of restaurants playing Friends and we're going caving and tubing in the next few days.
