After another successful bus journey and well behaved decision, we were given the option of fully cama(total recline to a bed) plus dinner&breakfat and unlimited drinks including champagne!! We did think of treating ourselves but we continued to budget and stuck to what had served us well throughout the last 4months!
Yes we have know nearly been gone for 4 months and it still feels like yesterday but yet memories seem a lifetime a go, strange feelings!
We arrive in Buenos Aires, and with the money saved from the bus we caught a taxi to our hostel! Being experienced travellers now we had pre booked to ensure we got into the best party hostel Milhouse!
Milhouse was crazy, had proper security, a warm welcoming feeling and a great community area! We were impressed! Even though we had booked a 8 man dorm we were checked into a small 4! Much better and we had two lovely Canadian guys we exchanged our typical travel stories and headed out to find some food!
We settled ourselves into BA really quickly and enjoyed walking the very open planned beautiful city. We did some essentials before returning back late to have a quick bite to eat and start some drinking games with our new friends. The problem with party hostels as we call them is.. they have there own bars which stops you from keeping costs low and doing your own pre drinking. For this reason we ended up in hostel down the road, we played our games and being a little more exprience Hana & I teamed up against the boys. After a few hours and a bottle of gin & vodka we set off back to our hostel for a hugh party. We were shocked when we arrived, we expected a bar full of backpackers but not a hugh night club! This was perfect for us as we want to party in BA but not suitable for the quiet traveller.
I feel I need to try and explain Argentinans party habits, they do eveything 3 hours later than normal western countries. You don't eat until 9pm you maybe consider starting pre drinks at 11pm and don't venture out to party until 2-3am! Most nightclubs don't open until then and if you arrive then it is probably dead! This didn't really both Hana or I as we are not into the electric or house music so when everyone left at 2am we followed some others to a row of bars.
This may have been successful but the mixture of fresh air added to the mixture of alcohol consumed meant we decided we would prefer to find some good drunken food and head off to bed. Easy I hear you say..... NO..... Are taxi driver did not know our hostel but did know where we wanted to go but only after some fun word exchanges! Now Hana & I need to learn the benefits of taxis that they can take you directly to your front door but we are always convinced and want to save some pennies that we always ask the driver to drop us off as soon as we think we are close and we can walk. Usually works but not this time, seeing the massive oblisque the main land mark for us we jumped out saving some money but also outside Maccy's and were certain where we were and how to get home! Turns out thou we had no idea, after a little wonder we returned to Mac D's and tried to ask for directions but no one spoke English. That night is a moment I will never forget we spent some time talking to the security guard via google translate! It was a priceless moment! Not very successful as we were convinces he was giving us the wrong directions and so didn't take the advice, even when we asked others we still didn't belive them. It was no good we had to get another taxi and this time trust them and guess what they do know and hey can take you to your door. It was an eventful night, it had taken us over an hour to return home but we did laugh a lot and jumped into bed for a good nghts sleep!
We awoke a little worse for wear, but smiling after our nighttime adventure, we had an easy day planned..... Shopping! Slipping straight into Argentinans way of life we were ready to start our day by 12pm! We decided to splash out on a tour....we wanted to make sure we saw a football match before we left S.America and we had heard that a Boca Junior match was not one to miss! Apprently they are a big famous team, I'm sorry but it is lost on me! We had some time before pick up so we did some unsuccessful shopping but were happy in that we are warming to city life and enjoyed the hussel and bussel of BA!
Returning back to our hostel for our football match we changed into our best football clothes that turned out to be Boca Junior colours, so at least we weren't going to be beaten up! We got on to the bus everyone super excited just like us for it was my first football match ever and I didn't know what to expect! We drove to the main street leading to the stadium and I'm not sure if this is normal but all the shops around the stadium have to stop serving alcohol 3 hours prior to games so the only way for travelers to drink is in someone home!!! Yes that's right 50 odd travelers piled into someones backyard. The house was a wooden shack on stilts, the family pets ran around there was a BBQ on the go and the old man was frantically pullin out cans from his hugh frige trying to supply everyone with a drink! At the back was the dodge t-shirt seller! You could get you genuine fake Boca shirts, so fresh off the press you had to peal off the fake transfers yourself! I tried several on but the sizes weren't quite right so decided I wasn't a big die hard fan! After a few beers we were ushered back out onto the street to join the crowds! Then the stadium came into view a massive blue and yellow building with all the logos, I thouht it was prfect that at the entrance was a homeless man with his little home all set up listening to the game on his stereo! We were pushed throught the gates like cattle and taken to our stand! We were put in the safe section with locals but also all the travelers, unfortantly the away fans were above us and sticking close to a English footy fan he warned us about sitting below the edge....I will explain later why!! It was crazy we were sat opposite the die hard fans. Watching them was just mad, one would start a chant then they all joined in, jumpin in unison then are side would start no idea what they were saying it was Spanish but after a couple of hours you found yourselves jumping waving your arms and just shouting with them! They had a samba or at least some guys with big drums who played for the whole 5 hours! That is loyality! Sitting in the sun looking over the green stadium it looked a lot smelled than I expected but the atmosphere was deafening! As the sun started to set behind the stadium the players came running out causing the crowds to raise the roof even more! Watching the little figures run around after the ball it looked so stranger, you got straight into the spirit and suddenly felt united with everyone in your stand no matter you nationality! We had some near misses and you could feel the tension as the ball was played closer and closer to the opponets goal and the lull when it missed! But then in a flash a pass was played the tension built and then a noise so familiar shot around the crowds..... GOAL ......... We had scored no one need to translate what was going on! Everyone jumped and even thou it was a concrete building you could feel the groud shake and sway! We started jumping and screaming with everyone else, we were 1 - 0 up, go Boca Juniors!! The drums played louder and louder and the atmopshere doubled! The chants got louder singing a variety of different things! But no sooner had we scored but the opposite team Racing had scored an equallizer the crowd sank! I never really understood how boys got so into the match until that day where I found even a team I didn't support 110% was making my emotions run up and down! We then found out why we had to sit back below the challenging team, from nowhere came a smoke canister followed by water which isn't water it is the fans peeing over the edge! It was crazy the rivarly! The whistle blew for half time score 1 a piece! The crowd didn't let up they kept the spirits high willing the Bocas to come back to take victory in the second half. When the players returned to the crowd tried to motivate the team, they had swapped ends and we were behind the rivral teams goal and the tension was increased everytime they approached! You were on the edge everytime a corner was given! Praying we would take the lead but oh no the worse happened Racing scored another that was it the crowd however hard they shouted, prayed and chanted the game ended 2-1.. boca Juinors had lost! But that didn't seem to change the crowd they still were as happy as ever jumping and chanting. I'm not sure what they were saying but I could read the hand jesters being exchanged with the rival team! We were left celebrating our defeat for a hour or so while they let the away fans leave, apprentely football matches in Argentina can be more violent than English games. A little nervous but so caught up with the atmosphere it was soon time for us to leave, this was scary than most things we had done! Hordes of people exiting through small passage ways down stairs, fans banging on the walls pushing and pulling you as you trying to manage the stairs and rails! The floor was soaking wet from away fans peeing again this is to mark there teitory proving we are just animals sometimes!! Even though our team had lost it was still one of the best experiences I have encounter and one I would love to do again!
As our bus arrived at or hostel we were starving it was 10pm so we weren't expecting much for dinner. Are faces lit up when along the streets walking toward were are new Canadians friends Pam and Gill, we had meet through George and Cat in carnival! It is so exciting when you meet up with friends you make, I can't explain why but it is the best feeling! We did our run and hugs, told them of our buzzing afternoon and set off to find somewhere for a gossip and food! Forgetting Argentina ways we were shocked that resturants were just starting to get busy and we indulged in some beautiful steaks and beer and talked till midnight before departed back to our beds for som sleep we had a busy tourist day booked tomorrow!!!
The next day we awoke having lots planned so no hanging around, slipping into the Argentinans way again we were ready to start our day by 12pm had some breakkie/lunch and set off for our walk to San Telmo Market. This is known as a hippy Market and yep definately was filled with crazy different niknacs but we loved the fact that all our crazy clothes we had brought were laid out on the floor at triple the price we had paid!! We considered buying our jester trousers again as our orginals had been flewn home but we resisted. We brought a few gifts and touristy souvieners and sat and watched the street Tango shows! The sun was shining brightly and it was so warm and sitting on the pavement we both started to really enjoy our travelling life again! The dancers were amazing, much slower than I first expected but the foot work was impressive totally different to salsa and samba! We did laugh and mention how it looks a little like drunk dancers falling over each others legs! We walked all the way back to hostel through the hundreds of stalls that by the time you had walked the first 20 the rest sold pretty much the same thing. Back at the hostel we had some a late afternoon snack before setting off in the other direction.
Walking around BA is beautiful it's so open, feels clean and fresh! We walked for miles talking about everything! Stopping only to take our tourist pictures, but before long we realsied we had missed ourturnig and had to get our map out and readjust ourselves. We were looking for the famous cemetary where Evita lays! We finally found the place after some poor directions from me that lead us all around the outside the cemetary not that we minded too much as we came across some live music playing in the gardens and more markets! We sat in the glorious sunshine and enjoyed the music performances and then the street performers even you they spoke Spamish we knew when to laugh thanks to the crowds! We couldn't sit around all afternoon thou we had one of the most famous sites to see. We wondered back to find the entrance to the cemetary I looked on the map and found the grave site we were looking for Evita. Evita for those who want to know she was a lady who came from the people who was married to the president and made him change things for the better for the Argentianan poor people, unfortunatley she died young I believe from cancer and the people of Argentina did not like this and felt she had deserted them explaining the song! The cemetary again is hard to describe, it was not your ordinary cemetary no little White stones marking grave sites. Ever site all had tombs which had fabulous stone work! All cramed into this small space surrounded by modern buildings. There were long passage ways inbetween these tombs! I feel ashamed that these people were obviously here for good reason they had done some amazing things but I knew nothing of there achievements not even really Evita! I was suprised when we finally found Evitas site which i belive was made out of black granite, which was a deep black but with a White glinsing shine to it! There were lots of people snapping away but her site wasn't as grand as others it wasn't apart from the others, no it was down a little ally surrounded by others with just some small placks to inform you of who was burried here! It was a fansiating place but completely lost on us so we took some pictures and then walked the miles back to our hostel!
We had always planned to have a few dinners out in BA to enjoy as much steak as possible! So that night we dressed up again and wondered around for a nice resturants! We hit gold with a nice place that looked great but best of all had a live free tango show! Unfortuntly the food was aweful but the entertainment was great! After Hana being chosen for so much she convinced me to save her, so when the host of the show came to grab one of us for a dance I offered! I love practicing the tango dance not sure I was so successful in flip flops but I did love it and apprently he told Hana over my shoulder I was pretty good! We had a great time and before we knew it was late again and time for bed!
The next day we had planned to meet up with Pam and Gill for a day out! We had two choices the zoo or Boca to see the multicoloured houses! We choose the Boca trip as we wanted another easy day! It wasn't so easy it was a long walk through some back streets. We walked passed the stadium again only to try and take some pictures to find over efficient Hana had charged the camera but forgot to pick up the battery! So no pictures today! We were walking down some serious back alley streets seeing all the locals we were definately in localsvile!! We finally found what we were looking for and it was a little disappointing! Looked very tacky kind of like a film set! There were lots of buildings all funky colours made out of what looked like coregated metal, like bright little shanky huts! All the resturants tried to get us into there bars to drink using lots of cheesy chat up lines, although it was national ladies day so maybe not all so cheesy! All the bars had live tango shows but we had seen our fair share for free and didn't need to pay over the price drinks to watch more! So being true backpackers we brought some drinks from a corner shop and sat down watched the world pass by discussing anything and everything!
It was to be our last evening not only in BA or Argentina but also South America. So we had planned a big night out with the girles! Starting with a good meal... Steak and famous Argentinan red wine then a night out in town. We got dressed up walked the streets, Gill had found out what "rare" was in Spanish so that we could indulge in the best. We found a bargin resturants, ordered our food and choose our wine. Gill then showed us how to taste wine professionally and we laughed and giggled! The random guy next to us speaking no English saw we were having a good time and gave us his two free bottles of wine! Still no idea why but maybe he just wanted us to have the best! We took these back to the Hostel and sat on the roof terace watch the city rush by while we enjoyed the remained wine. That night we found out some interesting things about our new friends and before we knew time again had flewn by. Wanting to dance we went back to our party hostel to the club, it was packed. We lasted till the lights were turned on and we carried our party out to the streets and true to form the little cafe bars were still open. So that night we continued our drinking on the side on the main street in BA till 4am! A perfect ending to a perfect trip through S.America! We have had our ups and downs some terrible times but looking back those memories have been erased and only filled with thoughts of great friends and special once in a lifetime moments!
Promising Hana a trip to Lujan zoo a place where you can play with tigers and lions we left this for our last day! We had built up Nerves about our flight that online said it went to Sydney when we wanted to go to New Zealand!! Oh well only time will tell!
We set off for the zoo a little later than planned. We navigated our way around the sub way, which in itself was unique! It looked like an old fashion tram under ground, the doors manually slid open and everything was made from wood and look so antique it was super cool! We arrived T the main bus terminals and in our very confident Spanish asked for directions only to hit a brick wall with a very rude guy who just said "NO" even when our destination was on his board! Unfortunately our Spanish was not good enough to ask questions or understand replies and our hearts were broken! We could not make it to the zoo :(! I tried to make things up to Hana by going to the city centre zoo but it wasn't the same and we ended up taking more pictures of ourselves than the animals! We are that vain!!!
We finally returned back to our hostel but not only were we really disappointed but our uneventful day but we were also very sad about leaving! We were nervous about NZ and although we knew it would be easier we had grown to love our time here! I'm not one to enjoy change even if for the better! We put our flight clothes on and wasted our time by having one last steak that no matter how hard we tries to get it rare still came back medium, I think that is how it is best to be fair it is still so soft and tender so no complaints!! Luckily Pam and Gill arrived back from there day out just in time to say goodbye and wave us off. It was a strange feeling for us we had never really done the leaving before, we normally said the goodbyes! Another strange feelings were that none of the friends we had meet travelling were going our way so we would now never just bump into them! We were setting off on a complete new adventure.
We made it too the airport after one last true S.American moment of our taxi filling up while we were in the car, won't miss this! At the airport relief out flight did go to Sydney but it stopped to drop off in Auckland so with no more fears we waited patiently in the departure lounge!
After some of our travelling adventures you would think we would deserve a break now! But no one last send off sat on the plane waiting for take off we set off for the runway only to turn around and head back.... Engineers rushed back onto the plane headed to the tail! Great our plane was broken however we didn't pay much attention it was 3am and we were both fast asleep in our uncomfortable seats we never felt the plane re-attempt to take off! We slept most of the journey, both a little upset as due to our delays it would mean we would miss Sally, One of Hanas closest and oldest friend who moved to NZ 2 years ago!
Whoop whoop we landed with no more problems ready for our new adventures in New Zealand!!!
