"You better Belize it!!" This is our Belize log! As you can imagine this is the countries phrase and its heard a lot in the islands! Its very cheesy but unfortunately very catching.
We both had finally decided we were done with Mexico and have decided to venture into true Central America, especially as time is short and we are in a rush to get to Argentina. Our first stop.... Belize and the island of Caye Caulker home to the Blue Hole! Travel so far had been easy, however Belize City is a place you dont want to hang around and therefore times of coaches to boat times was critical but achievable!
Arriving at the border of Mexico still unsure on whether we needed to pay to leave the conutry we queue to receive our exit stamp. The guy infront of us told us not to pay anything, this guy then refused and tried to walk away however the Mexicans started to follow with there guns he stood firm and they soon left him be. This gave us the confidence to refuse payment too, nervously we argued and were allowed to pass without payment I informed others we had meet on the bus and with this the Mexicans got funny saying I needed a work visa to be a tour guide however laughed it off and jumped onto the bus. Passing through the Belizan immigration was an interesting moment as I wasnt aware that Belize was still a British Colony and had a very Carribean vibe very different to Mexico. Instant relief we would finally understand the language and enjoy a very chilled out experience.
The bus arrived in the centre of Belize City and we set off for a very short walk to the pier, however this was a very intimating walk constant shouts from local people and you always had a watchful eye. Although we had become a group with two other Kiwis which helped. The boat crossing was beautiful and luckily Becki didnt get her reoccurring sea sickness.
Stepping off the jetti to Caye Caulker was crazy, this is a small island full of local people selling food from their houses, dive centres and little beach huts for tourist to stay however everyone had a massive Caribbean smile on their faces. Still sticking to our traveling ways we traipsed in the 30 degrees heat up and down the three street island looking for a cheap place to stay. We finally hit the jack pot and came across Tropical Paradise. For only £6 each we had a private room, bathroom and amazing view from our balcony.
We had heard great stories about mind blowing diving and out of this world snorkeling trips so we went on a information gathering mission. This didn't take too long as the whole island consisted of three streets and you could walk from one side to the other in a matter of minuets... Sadly after our hospital trip in Chetumal Hana was too pumped of drugs to clear her chest infection and mend her finger to dive and Becki wasn't confident to indulge in diving the Blue Hole without her buddy so we decided to stick with snorkeling. On our tour of the island did however identify a shack which was owned by a large Caribbean women with an even larger personality called Fran. For only £8 (which was cheap on the island) we could get fresh BBQ Lobster, Red Snapper and BBQ chicken, two drinks and Becki's favorite part Oreo cheese cake. It was so good we ended up eating there twice, to be fair I think we both loved Fran as much as we enjoyed the food.
Our first night on the island resulted in us meeting a group of about 8 lads who ended up getting Becki extremely drunk (Sadly Hana couldn't drink coz of the tablets) playing dice games. Two of the guys, Andy and Danny we got on with really well and ended up meeting them again later in the trip. Due to the size of the island there was a defiantly drinking route that started at Joes, then went to I and I bar and finished with late night dancing at Ocean Side.
The following day we chilled out at the Split, which was a "split" of the island, a hurricane in around 1950 hit the island and split it in two. One side is inhabited and the other is covered in mangroves and has a few house on but it has a record number of mossies! After chilling out at the split and getting caught in a massive tropical rain storm we booked a snorkeling tour and headed to our hostels private beach. On the beach we started watching local children fishing however the dirty Sand Flies got the better of our fresh English Skin and we heading back to our room. That night we took it easy, played some cards with our new friends and ate at Frans.
Whoop whoop the day of snorkeling had arrived, three stops with one being Shark Alley! The first stop was full of the little aquarium fish. The colours we so diverse, it was like looking at Josephs technically colour dream coat in fish format. Our second stop was even better, we arrived to be met with a two meter Nurse shark circling our boat. Our group jumped into the water but we had to stay together as a group as we were in a national park and the waters were dangerous due to channels. This session we saw a mixture of different size fish, rays, turtles and corals. We then dropped our anchor and had lunch and then headed to our final stop. One of the girls felt sea sick so sticking to the tradition of lime curing everything, she was given lime to chew on. She wasn't as convinced and also took good old western sea sickness tablets.
Shark Alley was rightly named and as we approached a group of six sharks surrounded the boat and we all watched in ore as our guide fed them. The sharks were massive, however they didn't have teeth so the sucked their food in. This reassured us, as the most danger we were in was getting a massive love bite! Saying this it was still a little scarey jumping off the boat into the sea, even more so as Becki and I were the first to do it. Our trip back to the main land was topped of with a encounter with some wild Bottle noise dolphins who were enjoying our company as much as we were theirs. They put on a wonderful gymnastics display, which we all watched with our jaws on the floor.
We arrived to the island with plans to party again to find the only ATM on the island broken and us out of money. As a result we had a cheap dinner and a quite night in, ready to leave the island in the morning and head to Guatemala.
