Venice
The world is my school today my classroom is in Venice, Italy!
Venice is a city that has been trough a lot and is still going through more, at this moment Venice is slowly sinking. Venice started as a marsh with some lagoons and is now a floating city of paradise; well that's what I think of it. Venice is so beautiful, especially on a Gondola, which is the boat that everyone rides around on. It has a flat bottom so it is almost impossible to tip over. All of the gondoliers have one part of the gondola that they own and keep when they retire. It's the part that they rest the oar on. This is so special to them because it has been with them through their entire career and it was specially made for them. They are all made of wood. There is a little hole in the gondola that you put your oar rest in. All of the boats are decorated with gold paint and some small statues. It is very beautiful and seems more beautiful when there is a singer and accordion player on board with you. We were lucky and got to have this on Captain Olivia's birthday!
When you arrive to Venice, you have to take a plane, then a boat in order to reach the town. In Venice the gondoliers can only ride during certain times of day, this is because of the rising waters; some blame this on global warming. During high tide gondolas don't fit under the bridges; during low tide they fit, but everyone has to lie down. What will happen when the gondolas can't roam the canals of Venice any more?
Venetians have many specialties, for instance, making leather. My favorite of all the Venetian specialties is the yummy pastries.
Venice has many bridges but there is one that stands out, the Rialto Bridge. It was made by Antonio de Ponte, and is one of the four bridges that crosses the Grand Canal.
Venice has a major thing that it is known for… Masks. Venetians, a long time ago, wore masks so that they could go out to parties and have bad behavior while nobody would know whom they are. There was also a mask for doctors, during the plague. They wore it so that they could cure other people while not getting sick. It had a long beak stuffed with herbs to keep them from breathing in the sickness and germs.
The hotel that we stayed in was on a canal so when the tide came up we had to walk through water to get to the hotel. During the night they had to close doors and take away the carpet. Some places have little make shift bridges so that in an emergency they can get out before the house floods. We were very lucky that we were on the 4th floor so even if the tide came up really high we wouldn't get flooded.
