Pompeii
The world is my school today, and my classroom is in the ancient city of Pompeii.
Pompeii is an ancient Roman town-city near Naples, in the Italian region of Campania. Pompeii is the home of Mt. Vesuvius, which is the volcano that erupted in 79 AD killing the whole city. Most houses and people were buried under 4-6m of ash from the eruption. Scientists believe that the city of Pompeii, was founded in the 6th the or 7th century BC. They also believe it was captured by the Romans in 80 BC. When the volcano erupted (160 years later), Pompeii's population was around 20,000. At that time the city had a water system (aqueduct), an amphitheater, a gymnasium and a beautiful port. The eruption was cataclysmic (which means violent and terrible), for the city. Evidence for the destruction came in a letter by Pliny the Younger, who saw the eruption from a distance. He described the death of his uncle, Pliny the Elder. He was an admiral of the Roman fleet, who tried to rescue the citizens. The site was lost for 1500 years, until in was rediscovered in 1599. During the excavation, plaster was used to fill in the cracks between the ash layers that once held Pompeii's citizens. This allowed us to see what citizens looked like when they died, and got coated in molten lava and ash. Now Pompeii is a #1 tourist attraction and a must see, that's why we saw it. Today it looks amazing for all that's it's been through! You can see all of the people that got coated, and also see their position when they died. It was scary and fascinating!
I lava you!
