What's he doing? Praying to Mecca? Doing the wave? Yoga? Nope, he's trying to avoid (further) brain damage and keep his core temperature down. Don't get me wrong here, we're not complaining, but Holy Hot Batman. It's supposed to get up to 39C today -"but it's a dry heat...er whatever"! Luckily we don't have anything really to do, no people to meet and no deadlines to make so we've been keeping our exertion to a minimum. It's supposed to cool down to 30C by Sunday so that'll be a relief. I really have nothing to report. We spend most of our days reading, interspersed with the odd day-trip to Freemantle, or downtown Perth, and a jaunt to the local mall to stock up on essentials (wine and tonic water for the very refreshing Vodka Tonics). Barbara got a book on wine and has been studying madly. We're also trying our hand at Yoga. It hard! It's a humbling feeling to be, seemingly, simply standing with proper posture and to be sweating profusely, and quivering like jello. We're blaming the heat. I don't know what we'll blame when it cools down. I can't remember the last time I had to concentrate so much, just to breath. I think becoming a certified Yogi is going to be a bit of a long journey.
Once in a while we feel hyper and go for a run along the beach. Makes me feel like Magnum PI. It's at least cooler down by the water, and then we can jump into the pool when we get back to cool off.
The Aussies aren't quiet as friendly as the Kiwi's, but they're still nice enough. Things are darned expensive here in Perth. They're undergoing a boom at the moment so we're reading about the same sorts of problems and complaints as we left in Calgary. Shortage of people, urban sprawl, skyrocketing prices (we saw someone order 2 thin pieces of white toast, jam & butter the other day for $4.50 - uh, what!?!?) service people can't afford accommodation. This sort of crazy lifestyle is basically what we were trying to escape! Oh well, it's only for a short while. Apparently this phenomenon is centered in Perth. Gotta go and keep hydrated. Love to all.
