Broken fuel pump
Well, I guess a road trip isn't a road trip without a breakdown, and what better place to have it happen than in the middle of the prairies. It started with the fuel pump letting go about 30k outside of moosejaw Saskatchewan. After calling caa to get a tow the car started up so we cancelled the tow and attempted to make it into town where we knew there was a Canadian tire. We made it about 800 meters from the Canadian tire when it died again, luckily it was down hill and we could push it into the Canadian tire. After talking to some people we found that the Volvo requires an extremely high fuel pressure, and not being in stock it will take until Tuesday to arrive. So, without a car in moosejaw we didn't really have a way to get around. Some mechanics said that we should be good, with the weight and how low we were in fuel we probably just overheated the pump and we should be able to carry on with a full tank of gas. Since we thought that this was our only option we headed back on the road with a full tank of gas. Everything was great for about 40k, and the coughs came back, and we were at the side of the road once again. We called caa again and got another tow truck, which after abbot 1.5 hours came and picked us up...and then ran out of gas about 20 feet after we were loaded up right in the middle of the transcanada. So we all had to wait for a break in traffic and push the flatbed towtruck off the highway. Then we were in for another 4 hour wait for another tow truck to show up, since it was a diesel it needed to be primed and becausea it was a new truck neither driver knew how to do it. Finally they figured it out and we were on our way back to moosejaw. So in total we spent around 6 hours in the centre median on the transcanada. But now we had no where to stay, no car and it was getting dark. Feeling bad about making us wait and being one of the nicest people we have ever met he offered us his motor home in his driveway to sleep in, AND the use of his garage in a small Christian community outside of moosejaw. His garage has a hoist, and pretty much any tool you could imagine. So he's going in to do some paper work and letting me use the hoist and take my fuel pump off to assess. I just really, really hope Canadian tire gets the part right... And that's where we are at.
