Like the rest of my trip, i feel the trekking week has been and gone all too quickly! Having been expecting a strenuous, muscle burning, back breaking week of torture, the trekking turned out to be quite bearable! On the first day we left onme campsite and made our way into the jungle and where we would be camping for the rest of the week. When leaving the campsite all of our bags were piled into the back of a truck. When i asked if i could move my bag into a more secure position in order to make sure it didn't fly off the back whilst driving our navigator replyed " No, you in back too" so in we piled too!
Half way up a dirt track road we all got out of the truck and started walking to our campsite, whilst the truck (thankfully with all our bags) went ahead. We walked for about 4 hours until we got to our campsite which wasn't too much hard work considering the tempertature was in the high 30's, and set up camp. The campsite was on the brow of a hill which had beautiful views of the surrounding jungles. That night however, all was not well. Our tents did not have any tent pegs and so camping on an exposed hill suddenly didn't seem like such a novelty. In the early hours of the morning the wind picked up and i soon found myself completely wrapped in my tent with no idea as to which way was up nor down!
The following morning i woke up feeling tired and grumpy yet still ready for the day ahead. On the second day we went pot holing in the caves which was really exciting as we had to crawl on our stomachs with our head torches in order to find our way out.
After a hot day of walking and climbing and pot holing we trekked down to a waterfall which was just 5 minutes from our camp. When i say trekked we had to absail down vines, climb over tree roots and scramble down rocks! But the waterfall was beautiful. We ran, jumped and stayed there for the rest of the day!
The evenings on the campsite were really chilled out, there was no electricity so we'd sit around the camp fire eating dinner and drinking Thai rum with a couple of lanterns and the moon to help us navigate our way around. That night my attempts to peg down my tent with rocks and stones failed and it was another sleepless night. This went on for the whole week!!!
One evening our navigator, Pod, told us that we had been invited to a Thai wedding celebration which was taking place in a village just 5 minutes down from where our campsite was. Pod told us that had we been a larger group he wouldn't have taken us so we were really fortunate, also he new the family so i think in order for him to go he would have had to taken us along with him! The celebrations were taking place in the family's home which was a traditional Thai house built on very large stilts. The floor boards were made up of odd bits of wood so we had to carefully navigate our way round the large wholes in the floor in order to stop ourselves falling through! Pod told us not to look down.
When walking in we were welcomed like old friends, we were shown to a piece of stable floor were we sat down and were given even more food and drink. I was introduced to the groom and all of the grandparents before being asked to dance by a group of 20 or so Thai boys! The celebrations went on for another 2 days after that!
On the second to last day we trekked up a monsterously small mountain which towered over our campsite and was quite hard work. Pod does the same walk every week so you can imagine how hard it was trying to keep up with him, but we did, and we made it up to the top in good time. On reaching the top we took a couple of pictures, got our breath back and bombed it back down the bottom! We grabbed some soup and made our way to the waterfall. It was by far the best shower i have ever had! (but also the worst shave!)
