Muncho Lake Days
Saturday, Sunday, May 13 and 14, 2017 Miles to today's Stop: 150
Time Leaving: 8:45 a.m. Temp: 40 degrees. Rain, Rain, Rain.
Province today: British Columbia
Accrued miles to Date: 3688
Saying for the day: Be good to people for no reason.
We head out for Muncho Lake today, which means "The Great Lake." Right away we see lots of thick stands of pine, birch, spruce and aspen. And a sign that says “Bison Crossing;” just not when we came along. The first part of today's journey the roads are pretty rough but they do smooth out and we’re amazed how well maintained they are. We do have to watch for the Frost Heave signs, a good notice for us to slow down and not get everything all over the place inside the trailer.
We have a steep mountain ascent to 3519’ and Brrrr, it’s cold and 32 degrees with snow everywhere. Here the snow covered pines offer a beautiful respite from the rock walls we saw on the drive up the mountain. We have slush on the windshield and on the road while up that ascent but it quickly disappears as we steeply descend the mountain. We pass many mountain lakes and Stone Mountain Lake stands out as a pretty one covered with snow and ice. We are also seeing lots of patches of ice and snow everywhere we look. The sides of the mountains have frozen waterfalls that look like lacy veils.
We cross Racing River and look up into the mountains and see 3 Rocky Mtn. Goats WAY up high. They almost looked like rocks, until they moved!
A stop at Toad River to gas up and talk to a fellow and his wife who live in Alaska; we had a nice chat for a few minutes while they were eating and got a few insights to some of the best places to be sure to see.
We arrive at Muncho Lake at 12:30, WOW! A beautiful, beautiful lake and huge like they said. We stop at the second Provincial Park and find a nice site. The first thing to catch our eyes and our ears is a funny sound. We look out on the lake and there stand 2 seagulls. They must have insulated boots on their webbed feet to withstand the icy temps. Lovely green water under the ice and our campsite is right on the Lake! What a view!! Here it’s 41 degrees, so we didn’t gain much today for temperature.
Arrive: Muncho Lake, Provincial Park, British Columbia at 12:30pm
How long staying: 2 Nights and no WiFi – ouch!
Sunday, May 14, 2017 Temp.: 37 degrees and flurries
Saying: Quiet the mind and the soul will speak.
Happy Mother’s Day to all!
What a beautiful, tranquil morning, waking up to the ice and snow covered lake, the fog on the pines up the mountain on the other side of the lake, & the silly sea gulls standing on the ice again.
Now the snow is really coming down, it’s enchanting. I think we’ll have to go outside and experience it since we had no Winter in Clayton this year. Check the pictures.
A walk around the park in the 37 degree weather is just what we needed and we met some nice folks from Montana on our walk. We had a nice chat with them and they’re doing the same thing we are, no real time for a destination, and lots of winging it as far as where to go next. And no date they must be back home. We hope to run into them again on the way in or out of Alaska at some point.
The mountains are so awesome in this setting and most of them with some snow on top; they look like they’re RIGHT here. These are still the Northern Rockies.
We took a walk after dinner and discovered a herd of Rocky Mtn. Stone Sheep along the hwy by our campground, the ones with the big curly horns. One walked right out into the road, forcing cars to stop. He was looking like “the Boss.”
It turned into a beautiful sunny day for us and we are grateful for such amazing sights we are getting to see. High today 47 degrees.
Where to next: Watson Lake
Bison, Bears, and Bunnies, Oh My…
Monday, May 15, 2017 Miles to today's Stop: 153
Time Leaving: 7:00 a.m. Temp: 41 degrees
Province and Territory today: British Columbia and Yukon Territory
Accrued miles to Date: 3841
Saying for the day: If 40 is the new 30, and 50 is the new 40, why can’t Thursday be the new Friday?
An overcast day but looks like the promise of sun. We got on the road early today. While traveling down the road, we come up on several craggy Bison and babies. 11 adults and 8 babies. They just munched away while we took pics, but one of the males kept his eye on us.
The sun glittering off of a dew covered stand of Aspen saplings is breathtaking.
When we pull over to get out and stretch our legs we see hoof prints in the mud along the road, Bison hoofs – in this area they’re everywhere, especially this stretch of the road. The raucous sound from 3 Pileated woodpeckers flying into the trees grabs our attention too..
We follow along the Coal River, a big, wide river with rapids and snow lined shores. The Rockies in the background, such awesome scenes of nature we are so privileged to enjoy.
Wow! A black bear grazing at the side of the road, sniffing the air; he knows we’re taking his picture!
On down the road, more black bears and bunnies!
9:56 a.m. we cross the border into The Yukon Territory. Their slogan: Larger than Life.
Arrive Watson Lake, Gateway to the Yukon at 11:00 a.m. Set up, grab some lunch and then check out the town, including the Sign Forest, where everyone leaves a sign from their hometown.
How long staying: one night
Where to next: Whitehorse, Yukon (Capitol) High Country RV Park
