I awoke the following morning & heading to the nearest bush in order to answer the call of nature, I stumbled across Joel.....asleep in a bush!! Although he doesn't recall anything, he apparently got up in the night & decided that a bush was much comfier than a tent & sleeping bag. It was amazing that he didn't get bitten or attacked by one of the wild dingoes that inhabit the island. Whereas mainland dingoes (they look like a mangy cross between a dog & a wolf) are very timid & run away from human contact, the Fraser Island breed have become accustomed to humans & have been known to attack in packs. On our first night of camping, a girl had left her tent door open & one actually dragged her handbag out of the tent & was ready to run off with it before someone chased it off. So how Joel came out of that night unscathed, I will never know!!
Today was our last day on Fraser Island before heading back to Rainbow Beach & the driving responsibilities were left to our American friend Kirsten. This unfortunately meant that we had to cram into the back seats for the first time & suffer the cramped conditions. Thankfully our first stop wasn't too far away. We parked up at the edge of the beach & walked through a forest for roughly 20 minutes. Apparently our destination was Lake Wobby & after emerging from the woods on to the biggest sand dune I have ever encountered (not that there is many), Wayne joked that the lake must have dried up!! Some people fell for this little prank & started to moan, but after crossing the dune's peak, the lake came into view & it looked glorious. The slope down to the water's edge was extremely steep & so people either sprinted down, unable to stop & crashed into the water, or some rolled down the bank towards the lake. We spent most of the morning lazing in the lake or by the shore, having sand fights or trying to catch the huge catfish swimming around in the lake. After the mornings shenanigans, we drove back to the ferry, waved goodbye to the island & headed back to our hostel.
That evening, the hostel put on a few games for us all to play & try to win free beers. First up was Musical kegs. Think musical chairs, but with kegs to sit on instead. We were split into groups & the winners would then all face off against each other in a final showdown. After winning my group, I went up against the others, with the rest of our Fraser group backing me for the win! Unfortunately I failed them!! Never mind, there were still 2 more games to redeem ourselves. The next game up was Wall Pong. The idea of this game was to bounce a rubber ball off the floor, on to a wall, off a second wall & land it in a bucket, or at least hit the bucket. Everyone started with 3 lives, losing one if you missed, keeping your lives for hitting the bucket & gaining an extra life for getting the ball in. After everyone had missed & all lost 2 lives, it was time for my final attempt. Bounce, bounce, bounce.....bucket!! I hit the bucket & kept my life, meaning that if everyone else missed, then I would win the beer. Unfortunately, 4 other people also decided to pull it out of the bag at the same time, so we headed to sudden death! None of us could repeat our amazing feat for some time afterwards, until one smart arse managed to get it in the bucket. Game 2 lost!!! Maybe it would be 3rd time lucky??
The final game was Flip Cup. 4 teams of 6 players would compete, with the winners of each semi final meeting in the final for ultimate glory. The Americans wanted me on their team & so did Team England, so I did the patriotic thing & stuck with England. We had 5 English guys & a Canadian girl on our team (they're in the Commanwealth, that'll do), whereas Team America managed to recruit a rogue Brit. Both Team America & Team England won their semi finals, so we would face off against each other. The idea of Flip Cup for those that don't know is to stand your team in a line. The first person mst neck their drink as quickly as possible, place your cup when empty on the edge of the table & flip it 180 degrees so that it lands upside down. Once your cup is flipped, the next team member can go. Team England started brightly & we were on to our 3rd member whilst America were stuck on their first. However by the time we both reached our 6th person, the teams were neck & neck & it would come down to who could flip their cup first. Then it happened, the cup landed upside down & the room filled with cheers......American cheers!!!!! We had lost to the Yanks at a drinking game!! Personally, I blame Canada!
