We arrived in Siem Reap at around 7pm after our 5 hour bus journey from Phnom Penh. As we arrived we ambushed by a load of tuk tuk drivers wanting to take us to their guest houses for free, so after much deliberation we decided to take one of them up on his offer... after around 30 seconds of tuk tuk riding we arrived at our guest house called Popular guest house. We were really suprised to see how nice it was, it was more like a travel lodge hotel then a guest house, so the three of us (me, Lau and Sandra) snagged a room for $9 a night which was a bargain for the room we got. That night we quickly had a shower and headed out for some dinner, after asking the locals where the best places to go were, they pointed us in the direction of a road which was lined from one end to the other with street food vendors/retaurants all with $1 menu's, which meant every dish they sold was just $1 and the food was amazing!!
Teh following day after a long lie in and some breaky at the hotel we headed out for a wonder around the streets of Siem Reap. The city isn't what we expected at all, we thought it would be like any other big city we had visited but Siem was all low small low rise buildings, the city looked more like a big village than a city and the builings reminded me of something from a wild west film with light coloured buildings and wooden shutters on the windows. There was one street we found band in the middle of town called "Pub Street" and it was lined both side's with bars and resturants all offering the best deals on food and beer. Most of the places sold draught beer by the jug for just $0.50, so in the mid-day heat the five of us all thought it would be rude not to... plus they were doing mexican food for $1 a dish which totally sold it to us. Anyway, 5 hours, 28 beers, 1 jug of Mohito and 10 Tacho's later we decided to go for some more street food but this time we opted for one with a bbq in the middle of the table where they bring you all the raw meat etc and you cook your own food... also to add to that we stopped at the shop along the way and brought a big bottle of rum and coke to drink with our meal. By the end of it we retired to the hotel to get some sleep as we were supposed to be getting picked up by a tuk-tuk driver at 5am to go and see the sun rise at Angkor Wat. We were woken at 5am by a banging at the door by our Ozzy friend Scott, we were all so hung over that we could barely move so we all thought it would be best if we asked the driver to come back the following day at the same time but he never turned up (thank god), so we all stayed in bed till at least 12pm sleeping it off!! The rest of that day was a bit of a blur, we just relaxed in the hotel and caught up with a few things whilst the others went round the local markets buying souverniers. The following day at 5am we did all get up and our new tuk-tuk driver did arrive, so off we went for our day of sight seeing around all the temples of Angkor. After buying our $20 day pass we arrived at the biggest religious building in the world and the most famous temple, Angkor Wat. We got there around 5.30am and there was so many people doing the same thing, apparantly getting there to see the sun rise over it was really spectacular, so after the long walk up to it we sat in wait with the camera ready, and when it did come it was worth the early start! Walking around the temple before daylight was a bit spooky with all the strange carving on the wall, but when the sun came up it really was beautiful and we could see why it was so famous! After a few hours of walking round Angkor it was back to our driver who took us to the next temple (I forget its name now), again we walked round for an hour or so and headed to the next one... and the next one... and the next one!!! By this time it was mid day and around 35degrees, we all aprieciated the temples and how stunning they were but once youve seen one temple you've kinda seen them all, so we decided to call it a day on the temples and head back to the hotel for lunch. That night was much more of the same... $0.50 beers and street food!
The next day and our last day in Siem Riep we all spent the day shopping around the markets and relaxing at the hotel before our farewell meal at night, it was the last night we would spend with Sandra (the Chilean girl) who we had been travelling with and sharing a room with for over a month now, as she was leaving at 4am to catch a flight home, whilst we on the other hand, were catching a 9am bus back to Bangkok. So we all went out for a nice dinner and a few beers before getting a early night for the traveling ahead. It was really nice travelling with Sandrita and we will miss her company, but hopefuly see her again soon! x
