We got the ferry over from Surrathani to Ko Samui, and experienced our first rickshaw (a truck with seats in the back) where they literally cram as many people in as possible. We'd done a bit of research and decided to stay at Had Chaweng as it had the nicest beaches. The place that we stayed at was right on the beach, and we had our own hut. We also found out from another couple that you can barter for rooms, so we managed to get a rediculous price for it. The following day, after much deliberation, we decided to rent out a scooter. I was a bit nerve racking, as Simon was going to be driving, and he'd never driven a scooter before. However, the test run went quite well, so Kirst jumped on the back and off we went. The benifits of having your own transport were immediately evident, as we stumbled upon a load of temples and giant statues in the middle of nowhere. We then went to see the 'Big Buddha' that overlooks Big Buddha Beach which had a great view of the coast from the top. We ended up carrying on driving all the way around the island, and saw a few waterfalls on the way. We did get a little bit lost and ended up going to the airport, but it was nice to see a bit of the countryside. On the night, we went for buy one get one free cocktails, and watch a storm coming in over the sea. The lightning was amazing and lit up the whole sky. Nedless to say, it wasn't long before the storm hit, so we swiftly made our way back to the room. A short but sweet stay in Ko Samui, however it really is a great island. We were going to stay a bit longer, but were very keen to get to Koh Phangan for some R and R.
