Day 10 Waking up in William Ck to the sound of early departures and constant generator hum, Matt and I decided to leave trailer there and head out to the Lake. First some very professional duct tape and cardboard surgery was performed on back windscreen, we ended up being quite proud of our efforts!
65km of 4WD track really not much difference to driving around Nymagee except in some places a bit soft and sandy. Passed several working cattle yards on way in with bores, surprised water isn’t too salty for stock and the condition of the Hereford cattle was pretty good?! Expecting more like Brahmans not those.
Totally worth the drive to some very moonlike landscape and finally the Lake. Incredible place, endless salt ‘waves’ of very crunchy ground. Everyone had obligatory taste test, snow angels and plenty of exploring the edge of the Lake. Salt chunks the rock for the rock boxes today this morning!
Back into William Creek to packup trailer and head off to Coober Pedy for some more dirt road action next few hours.
Ate huge late lunch at Johnny’s pizzeria in CP while Matty made some calls to tee up a new windscreen in Alice. Didn’t fall for the tempting prospect of a ‘Coat of Arms’ pizza at Johnny’s opting for the safer boring order of meatlovers and ham/pineapple ☺️.
With windscreen booked in at Alice on Thurs, relaxed a bit and had a look around Coober Pedy, checked into ‘Tom’s Working Mine’ for a self guided tour, pretty cool. Tommy found a few opal seams in the walls- so soft, most of the walls were made of gypsum, crumbling around Stu’s hand mining efforts, bit scary really when we got to the working explosives area and the emergency numbers sign posted on the wall next to blasting kit
