Last day in WA, featuring the usual packup spats and Matt anxious to get moving given we’re traveling 500km plus probably a 3hr detour to check out Victoria River Downs Station (where Big Stuey used to work) on our way to Katherine and we also lose 1.5hrs as we cross the border.
Lots of Harry Potter and some schoolwork in car along the way, the scenery is ever changing but we are definitely losing the salmon pinkish ranges of the Eastern Kimberleys and heading back into the bright ochre colours and spinifex of Territory country.
This was accompanied by the obligatory 130km/h speed signs.
VRD was impressive (only 110km/h limit on this gravel road!) with about 8 choppers lined up out the front and so many outbuildings, a massive setup. Back into Brahman country, wouldn’t have been much fun mustering cattle in this country Poppy!
Stopped in to harass the poor backpacker service station attendant at Top Springs with at least 50 sensor bell ringing episodes after which the challenge was on as it was discovered that if you ran fast enough it didn’t go off- he was pretty pleased to see us leave to say the least!
Still 3 hours to Katherine on single lane bitumen now - but we learnt quickly that means get out of the flipping way for the 3 stack Road Trains who do not even slow down, let alone move over for oncoming traffic!
