Hi, We are in Borneo, theres alot of jungle! It's really hard to travel by road here as there aren't many! You have to travel by river through the densest jungle you have ever seen. I'll start by telling you about the capital Kuching. It's only a small city but it has everything a capital city normally has, i think we were expecting a dusty town still living in the dark ages hunting meat from the jungle but you have to go up the river a bit for that. Theres not much to do there but there are some nice museums like the Sarawak museum and the local craft museum, there's some pretty nice resturants too. They like to eat sea cucumber here apparently it is very good for you and makes a very nice soup. We met a malay journalist who lived at the B&B inn where we stayed, called Nic. He was very helpfull and told us the best places to visit and told us alot about the histories of Sarawak and the tribes that live here of which there are 33. Some of them were headhunters (Iban tribe) but only untill the 1920's, you can still see the skulls in some of the long houses hung up to ward off bad spirits. The culutral village outside of Kuching was great they have about 7 longhouses of different tribes which are amazing, they nearly all stand on stilts and hold tribes of up to 200 people. They put on a performance of the traditional dances of each tribe and when it got to the Orang- ulu tribe of hunters they got out a blowpipe taht they use to kill monkeys and small animals in the jungle. They gut only dragged me up on stage infront of everyone and made me shoot it at a balloon, got it though! When we left Kuching Nic gave us two necklaces from a local tribe that he visited, he tends to pick up alot of these as he travels around researching the culture and tries to descover if there are any tribe still practising the old rituals. Up river to Kapit takes ten hours and if you get sea sick you won't enjoy the ride. Theres not much to see here it's very small but its ok for an overnight stay before getting the boat to Balaga where there are a lot of longhouses of the Kenya tribe who drink alot of homemade rice wine and chew nuts that make you high! There is a nice market in Kapit where you can see alot of jungle fruits and vegetables and they sell live chickens, we also saw wild boar being sold roughly chopped into family sized hunks of leg or head or rib. Thats it for now hope to update with pictures in about two weeks when we land in Australia. bye x x
