Our biggest drive yet, from Western Australia to South Australia on the Eyre Highway, over 2700kms without a town or village along the way.We set off early from Esperance and had to drive for 2 hours North to Norseman a very small town, which had a deserted and isolated feel to it, maybe because it was the gateway to the long open road ahead. We did however stop in the ghost town to fill the van with petrol and have a sausage sandwich for breakfast as we had set off so early we had nothing to eat.The weather was dull and overcast so it was quite chilly which was perfect for us as the van was less likely to overheat and it was far more comfortable inside. As we made the Eastward turn (Ella driving) on to the Highway there were a couple of backpackers hitching a lift, we waved as we drove past and hoped they wouldn't be waiting long for a ride.It was a very strange feeling getting on to the highway as we knew there was nothing in front of us for miles and miles and as we passed a few cars we knew that they were nearing the end and we were only at the beginning. The road started out quite green with trees on either side with lots of places for resting, there were even some people still camping from the night before. Our first stop after 193kms was at Balladonia Roadhouse which also has a motel. we brought more fuel and a coffee to keep us going. We had decided before we left that we would try and stop along the way as much as possible, to cool the van, keep the petrol stocked us and to give us a break from sitting in the car.It was Wayne's turn to drive the next stretch of the journey which included the 90 mile straight one of the longest stretches of straight road in the world.Wayne actually wanted to drive this section I was more than happy to let him. It was surprising how quickly the straight ended, we had our music on and we passed a few cars along the way. Although I think we were looking our for a bend in the road after about 40kms! When the bend finally appeared Caiguna roadhouse came into view, we decided that we would drive on to Cocklebiddy a very basic roadhouse with some petrol pumps, a few drinks, chocolate, pies and tyres for sale. It did have a few picnic tables with a children's play park so we sat and had a chicken salad for lunch which we had brought with us, scaring the blackbirds away as we ate.We were then on our way again, we passed a few of the road trains and we'd pulled out of the roadhouse behind one, I thought it was nice to have one to follow it was a bit of company! The scenery had become quite barren and dusty with small shrubs replacing the trees and greenery at the beginning; this was the true nullabor "treeless plain".In the afternoon we started to see some strange sights small bushes with covered in various objects. One was full of kettles hanging from the branches a bit further along the road one had hard hats, one with water bottles and another with boots. People obviously get so bored of the drive they stop and amuse themselves along the way, it also good for drivers like us, gives us something different to look at.
We drove on through the day until it started to get dark, we were nearing Eucla, the border town near to the head of the Great Australian Bight. As we drove from our last road house stop at Mundrabilla Roadhouse where we had a coffee to keep us going, the sky started to light up with flashes of lightning which were forking all over the hills and out to the sea in front of us. As we neared Eucla the rain started and the thunder rolled. We pulled in to the town, it was on a cliff set back a little way from the sea, it had a service station, a motel, caravan park a police house and about 2 other houses. We settled into the free camp ground to the left of the buildings and started to cook our dinner of lamb koftas. We then thought it would be a good idea to go for a well earned drink in the small motel bar. There were 4 other people in there when we arrived, 2 late teenage girls and 2 middle aged men, what a state! The girls were drinking, it looked as if they worked at the roadhouse and these were the only people they met, they were fairly drunk and dancing around, playing pool, eventually they all left in a car with some more booze, god only knows where they were off to seeing as we really were in the middle of nowhere!3 other customers came in 2 Australian guys and a Swedish girl, they were travelling from Sydney over to Geralton, a much longer drive than we were doing! As we settled into bed the storm started up again over the Southern Ocean, the sky turned an electric purple and the rain was so heavy it shook the van, eventually we found we had a small leak but not enough to worry us we eventually fell asleep ready for another long day of driving ahead of us.
