Here we are at the end of January 2014. Where has the time gone? How have we managed to 'do' South island in 2 weeks? But we have, oh and the memories. This blog doesnt even scratch the surface of the fun weve had or the many places weve seen. Ive read weve travelled over 19,000 km. Peter was aghast at that 'stat' then realised it included FLIGHTS! I did laugh, yes weve shared the driving, thank God we have. There have been some long days at the wheel because of the stops to look at this and marvel at that. But we are in Picton the most northern part of South island to catch the car ferry to Wellington the huge harbour at the bottom of North island.
Its a superb 4 hour cruise between the islands. Meandering through the beautiful Queen Charlotte Sound into the Cook Strait and over to the North island. Once in Wellington we just have an evening to see what we can, including a quick ride up the cable car - yes another!
So after a nights rest its back on the road again, the North Island is totally different to drive. Much easier, straighter roads but still the 100km/60mph limit even on the dual carriage ways. We arrive at Lake Taupo and take a walk to find hot springs are everywhere, including the beach right outside our hotel. Its very strange to feel very hot water just bubbling out of the ground. We have 3 days here so its back to the planning board.
The Information shops around New Zealand are terrific. So we decide on 2 totally different 'water' trips. Our first is a leisurely trip around Lake Taupo, only 8 of us - it is the end of their summer season - so a quiet boat and very restful. Our next trip is a White-knuckle ride in a jet boat! The Huka falls are a set of rapids off from Lake Taupo about 5miles from town. We get kitted up in life jackets - very wise - and Phil our hopefully very experienced driver takes the wheel for 30 minutes! Oh yes, very White knuckles!!!! I cling on for dear life, but dont stop laughing, its FANTASTIC. There is a video and pics which I'll no doubt bore everyone with, once home. Oh it was wild! Another brilliant memory.
Our last dayin the Taupo area is spent at Rotarua. They tell me more folks visit here than anywhere else in N.Z. Well this is my blog and my thoughts. Rotarua is full of hot springs, smells of Sulphur, full stop, end of story. Compered with the beauty of everywhere else, im sorry, it did nothing for me. Catch you soon.
