Wandering Wheels
The Alhambra in Granada, WOW! This former Muslim stronghold is an astonishing masterpiece to say the least. Exploring the walls and towers of the Alcazabar (fortress) returned panoramic views of the attractive city of Granada in addition to the snowy tops of the distant Sierra Nevada.
The unquestionable highlight of our visit was wandering through the Palacio Nazaries (see photo); the detail and inticacies of the plasterwork and tiles harmonising with the water features have to be seen to be appreciated. You could repeatedly visit this building and discover something new each time, truly breathtaking!
The vista of the Seirra Nevada inticed us to explore her heights, so over three days we snaked our way up, down and through the region called "Las Alpujarras". Surprisingly each day rewarded us with unique scenery. The huge, barren, parallel ridges (dotted with entirely white villages looking like low-lying snow) where replaced with a multitude of smaller merging peaks covered with olive trees and fig plantations. Finally the landscape transformed into something resembling a mini Grand Canyon - magnificent!
The satisfaction and exuberance of completing the Las Alpujarras soon disappeared after getting the crushing news that my much loved dishlicker Kaid had to be put down because of a sudden illness ... the best therapy was to keep turning the pedals and take it out on the hills.
Halting in the British package-holiday haven of Mojacar we took time out to sample the waters of the Med for the first time (in addition to sampling the cocktails) then on to Benidorm, again filled with holidaying Brits ... except for the weather you would think we are no longer in Spain! The colour of the water is amazing and thankfully the colour of the sand is starting to change from grey to golden by this stage.
Another slight camping dilemma stikes ie. the near impenetrable ground is causing us to go through our tent pegs like we are the pasta supplies! We overcome this by acquiring some bad-boy nails. This conundrum is however for the future as we have temporarily retired the tent. Yep, up and down a few more hairpin turns and we are in Denia to board an overnight ferry to Mallorca; treating ourselves to a hotel for our "half way" celebration!!!
