Wandering Wheels
All refreshed from our long seista on Mallorca we dock in the lively port of Barcelona (home of the Barcelona Lemsip .. another story). Our first day is spent wandering the old town and absorbing the atmosphere on La Rambla, crowded with mime artists, bird sellers and a frenzy of tourists.
Day two is dedicated to a man synonymous with Barcelona .. GAUDI. After gazing at the splendours of Parc Guell, Casa Mila and his uncompleted masterpiece Sagrada Famalia it's easy to appreciate the notoriety of his work; awesome and truly unique! His influence from nature is ingenious and has convinced us to do away with the uni funds for the kids so we can return in 2026 to see his completed temple.
Round off our visit with the Picasso Museum. Interesting collection demonstrating the change in his style over time, many (as we were) who compare his well-known art to preschool drawings would be surprised by his early 'conventional' portraits.
Leaving Barcelona we eventually get back on the bikes to turn the pedals towards the Costa Brava and France. The coast road starts out mainly flat but increasingly gets 'vertically diverse' the further north we travel. We are treated to an awesome campsite just beyond gorgeous Tossa de Mar that has its own pebbly cove (magic!!); only pitfall is that the tariff is as much as a pension (not to mention having to pay for a car when we clearly don't have one!)
We complete our Spanish experience twisting along the beautiful coast road that skirts the mountainous slopes that fall to form the dramatic, rocky littoral and secluded beaches. Upon reaching the panoramic viewpoint at the border we are able to see a mass of shades of green toward the French side (mainly vineyards) and realise the realitive absence of its colour from the Spainish landscape. Adios!
