Wandering Wheels
Never having made it to the Balearic Islands whilst living abroad and hearing how beautiful they are we set sail for the island of Mallorca. With our "rest days" proving to be that in name only and our "half journey" celebrations to be had we decide to enjoy a holiday within a holiday filled with days lazing by the pool, soaking up the sun and savouring the surroundings.
The biggest highlights came the day we hired a car (Suzuki Geek Wagon .. but a nice change from turning the pedals) and explored the island. Following some tips from a good friend (cheers Pat) we took a brief look at pretty Port de Soller before embarking on the roller-coaster road leading down to Sa Colabra; 12klms long descending 700m via a multitude of hairpin turns (biggest obstacle was avoiding the masses of coaches). Reaching the carpark at the bottom, we restarted our hearts and followed the trail of beach bags and umbrellas along a pathway (tunnelling through a mountain) to an amazing peebly beach. The tiny shore wedged by spectacular cliff faces plunging into the blue-green sea; easy to appreciate why this location is so popular.
Returning up the twists and turns we continued on towards the island's northernmost point, passing a middle-aged couple cycling their tandem pulling a trailer ladened with two suitcases and adorning a kiwi flag (they get everywhere!). We are soon to discover the lighthouse at Cap Formentor with its white stone walls propped aloft the towering cliffs, far below a scattering of yatchs bobbing in the seemingly peaceful ocean. Would be nice to get aboard!
Our island experience is topped off in fine style; overlooking the bay of Palma from our hotel balcony with a bottle of bubbly to toast the half-way mark!
Distance to date: 5885klms
