Wandering Wheels
Taking in the Portugeuse way of life is not as easy at is seems. We are still unsure of what to think of the place, time will tell? So far we have discovered that that you need to possess a huge appetite, drive as fast and dangerously as possible and if you happen to be male, loose one of your eyes!
Despite our appaling introduction to this country (thanks to a filthy, overcrowded campsite crammed with reeking barbeques) the landscape is already proving very appealling.
First main stop was Porto where we jumped aboard a tourist train around the city and savour a tour of one of the many port cellars "Real Companhia Velha" as well as drop or two of its product. Later that night we were taken for another ride when ordering dinner, they saw us coming. On leaving we crossed the landmark bridge Pont De Luis and along the southern banks of the river (discovering the best viewpoint of the cityscape) before reaching the not too distant and inviting sandy coastline.
Following the coast road provided us with many wonderful aspects varying between sandy beaches and rocky outlines. However the condition of the road deteriorated the further south we got and was proving a great hinderance. Starting to think the best "off-road" riding "on-road" in Europe is here. The paw-paw ointment is getting a bit of a work out!
Two of the many scenic highlights in this leg included Obidos (a wonderful walled village vantaged on a hilltop) and Sintra; with its palacial buildings nestled amongst the forested slopes and Moorish Castle offering 360 views.
En route to Lisbon we stopped at continental Europe's most westerly point, Cabo da Roca, and were fortunate to soak up the spectacular rocky coastline before the tourist bus arrive.
We have been attempting to dodge the football fans flooding into Portugal for the Euro2004 but could not manage to do so any more once reaching the Lisbon area. The campgrounds are very different places with their prescence!
