Wandering Wheels
LISBON .. with brilliant weather and a short amount of time we were keen to make a start on historic Lisboa. Wanting to see as much as possible we inhale our coffee and set off on an open-top bus and tram tour. Using this resource provided us with a relaxing and complete view of this beautiful city. So many sights but worthy of mention was the Jeronimos Monestary, Torre de Belem and Podrao Dos Descolonimentos (imposing monument dedicated to the Portuguese discoveries, located on the river's edge and adorned with 32no. 7m high figures representing the prominent players in the discoveries).
Entertaining to sit on a footpath cafe (and eat snails!) with the passionate locals whilst witnessing their national team defeat Russia in the Euro2004 ... the city was deafening with the sound of car horns!
Leave Lisbon in beautiful conditions and land a campsite with the best facilities to date, including a big screen showing a movie! It's adjacent beach was backed by magnificent sandy cliffs comprising of yellow & orange formations like stalagmites. Contemplate staying an extra day but decide to move on to discover deserted roads and mountain ranges towards Eurpoes most SW point (Cabo de Sao Vicente) and the Algarve.
Our "straightforward & short" ride to Lagos ended quite the opposite after losing each other for an hour and then travelling on a dirt track winding it's way in and out of small coved beaches with aqua blue waters and grass umbrellas ... very tempted to park the bikes before reaching our intended destination!
Push on to Lagos and head out for dinner and a "quiet" drink, and we all know that turns out! While sipping cocktails we meet some honeymooning Glaswegians, Alan & Lynsey and the rest is history. Unlike the girls the lads get "steamin'" and pay for it the next day. Accepting the newlyweds generous offer of a bed the following night we spend the next day lazing in the sun poolside admiring the beautiful view of the Lagos coast (see photo) .. "great way to nurse a hangover!!" Thanks again guys!
Later that afternoon we take a romantic boat trip through the grottos around the Ponta da Picdade (see photo again).
Distance to Date: 4330klms
