I am in love with Porto! It is the second city of Portugal, next to Lisbon, and it is beautiful. We are enamoured with this Unesco World Heritage site and all its glorious splendour. There is a lot to love about this city from the views of the Douro river from the stunning double decker bridges, and the terracotta roof tops highlighting the skyline. To the charming little roads that wind down to the river from the hilly town littered with tile covered churches and buildings. This is a special place!
We went full on today and got our steps in, walking all over the place! Beginning with a walking tour of the city we got a history 101 lesson and are glad to know what the Portuguese have overcome. We were delighted to see old baroque churches with tiled facades and beautiful tiled buildings all thru out Porto, mostly blues with white and sometimes yellow. Cobbled streets make you walk with purpose but they are characteristic of this old town. We walked across one of the infamous Bridges to the other side of the river where many port lodges beckon you in. We toured one old family estate called Taylor's Port, the oldest family here and had a wee taste of delicious port which is made in the Douro Valley not far from here. There is a bustling river side here with live music and good food and many people walking along to enjoy the views. We couldn't get enough! Boats slip by and the sun soaked tiled roofs reflect a warm orange from the towns skyline.
We climbed back up to the top once we crossed back to the other side of the Douro. And enjoyed a delicious meal at a restaurant recommended by friends.
We think today we will drive to the Douro Valley for more stunning views!
