The town of 1770 is a laid back easy going tourist town. All the activities are dirt cheap as no one really cares about money. All the locals want to do is surf in the day. We got dropped off the bus about half an hours car ride away from the town at about 3 in the morning. Luckily a guy from the town had come to pick us up and take us to our hostel.
The following day we decided to enrol in the cheapest surfing lessons in the whole of Australia. It cost $16.50, about 7 pounds, for 3 hours lessons off a former surfing champion. Although this guy was clearly an amazing surfer, his teaching skills were not quite up to scratch. He was dressed in a zebra skin rash top and rash trousers, and had obviously obtained a huge beer belly since his surfing days. He sat the group down on the sand and talked to us about the magical energy in the waves and how to put your foot in the centre of the universe (or board). Half way through sentence he'd turn and look out to sea and carry on mumbling so that no one could here what he as talking about. Thankfully he shut up and we got first hand experience. It was great fun and not actually as difficult as you might think. We both managed to stand up several times! It was surprising how knackering it is though, and after the 3 hours were up we were exhausted.
The next day we wanted to do something a little less energetic so we went on a scooter-roo tour. This is where you hire a 50cc scooter in the style of a chopper and floor it down all the deserted roads taking in scenery such as kangaroos and the coast! It was great fun but also kind of scary at times, especially when you pushed it to its max going down hill and reached nearly 100kmh on two wheels! After surviving that we returned to our hostel where we slept outside for the night until 3am until the bus came again. The same guy drove us to the drop off location and waited until the bus came. It was pitch black in the outback and the stars were incredible, you never realise how many there actually are till your out there. Finally the bus came and we jumped on and headed down to our next destination, Fraser Island.
