Well, we are on our way home. We had a great trip but now it is time to head east. This will be my last entry for the trip.
We mainly just drove all day though we did stop at Petrified Forest National Park for lunch. We didn't see much of the park but did see a bit more of the Painted Desert that was more in keeping with what I expected. ( see cover photo)
To think back over the whole trip, I must say the Grand Canyon was probably the most impressive stop. For me, the most enjoyable feature was Custer State Park wildlife loop; I really enjoyed seeing all the different animals in their natural surroundings. Dale really seemed to enjoy driving through all the different topographies and landscapes. The most unexpected find were all the little out of the way National Monuments. We both loved them!
As for driving we mostly found pretty good roads once we were out of Virginia. We learned after the Badlands to avoid those gravel roads. If you are traveling west out of Virginia, I64 is the way to go, good road and little traffic.
The cheapest gas was in eastern Missouri at about $2.06 per gallon. We paid over $3 per gallon in some places.
All in all we have had a great trip and our now looking forward to getting home. Thanks to all who have been reading my musings; I hope you have found some enjoyment from them.
