It doesn't matter how much you plan, the big thing I've learnt on this evaluation is that it can all change in a moment. Sometimes it's little things, others are bigger.
After our lunch break today, we got in the car to head to another primary school to interview parents of children with disabilities. Only when we stopped at the primary school and other members of the team got out and we kept driving, I asked where we were going. Looks like we were on our way to an incense making workshop to interview people with disabilities who had received vocational training to make incense sticks to sell.
Given I've been so focused on looking at primary school education, I was excited to see something new. We met with the manager of the workshop and four workers. The local government gave them the building and WV donated the machines and trained everyone on how to use them and make incense sticks. They then sell the incense sticks at the market. All those involved in the project talked about how this project has given them self-confidence and independence with the ability to earn their own income.
After this, I had a couple of hours before we all come together for our nightly debrief meeting. I took advantage of the spare time to type up notes from yesterday's interviews. I also had a skype call with my family, who I am missing lots.
After our debrief meeting, we went out for dinner and arrived to see a table set for about 25 people. The ADP staff were coming to say goodbye, plus some local partners. As it turned out, only about half came, so it was a quiet dinner before heading back to the hotel for an early night. Right now I have the TV on the "Australia Network" watching ABC News. The weather has just come on and it says Melbourne tomorrow has a top of 14 degrees. In Hanoi tomorrow will be 36 degrees or Ho Chi Minh City will be 32 degrees. We find out today that the province we are in at the moment (Quang Tri) is actually one of the coolest provinces, but where we are going for the rest of the trip is so much hotter. Fantastic! I have come to grips pretty quickly that you are going to be sweaty and clammy and there's not much you can do about it. Unless you stink.... then take a shower as soon as you can!
Tomorrow we leave at 6:30am and travel to Phuoc Son. We expect to arrive there at 3:30pm before we meet with the ADP Manager and the Project Management Board of the Phuoc Son ADP. So tomorrow we'll finish up at about 6pm.
I've been really lucky with free wi-fi so I'm hoping that the other areas will be the same so I can keep up my blog. I hope you're enjoying the journey as much as me xx
