Well today was the proper start of our big adventure, this last 4 nights have been luxury to what we're about to experience apparently! Tents ahoy and apparently some nights it might reach 38/40degrees dry heat, wowzer I don't know how I'm going to survive. Maybe sleep standing upright in a cold shower...!?
It was a 5am alarm for breakfast before departing the hotel in order to board the ferry for a 7am sail. The ferry was nothing like I expected it was actually really nice and it was a beautiful morning. The crossing took 2 hours and we were then met by Chris our driving and the truck that's going to be my home for the next 31 days.
It's BIG! Seats 24 people upstairs and underneath is all the tents, equipment and luggage etc. It has two tables for 4 and the rest are double seats, pretty comfy it's just a shame about the roads!
Today was a transit day, I'm expecting a few of these as the trip we're doing covers a crazy amount of miles. 8000 odd kilometres apparently. Arrived in Da Salaam at 9.30am and started the journey through Tanzania to Malawi.
We went through Makumi national park, and from the road saw small elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, impalas and baboons.
Tonight was my first night camping!! We stayed next to the Ruah River in the Baobab Valley, it was basically the desert with a toilet block and a bar! Very basic and I would call it bush camping with a shower and toilet. We arrived about 6pm so it had been a long day travelling but at least we were shown how to put our tents up etc in day light :) They take about 10minutes to put up and have enough space in them for 2 people and 2 rucksacks.
We have all been split into work teams and every day we have a different job, today my team was on kitchen duty and therefore had to help Greg prepare dinner and do the washing up. The bus has a stove etc part of the truck, so it was all great fun for my first night but I'm sure by my 30th night I'll be over it lol.
They made a campfire and we all sat round and had a bacon and pasta dish, with salad and cheese for tea. It was so tasty for being prepared at the side of the van!
Tonight I shared with Pheobe which was really good, because she'd been with the trip since Nairobi so knew how it all worked! We chatted for a good hour before sleeping but it was too hot to sleep anyways. I was really tired though but well chuffed with my first night in a tent in the middle of know where with scorpions, monkeys, crocodiles and hippos within metres of the tent!
I'm still in shock in actually doing this trip hehe! Very proud of myself hahahahaha! xxx
