That's my 6 nights in Tanzania up, today is a 10 hour transit day through to Malawi. It was much cooler last night and slept no problem.
We stopped for lunch in Tanzania before heading to the border, it looked a nice hotel from the outside but was unsure about the chicken we we're eating :( Let's hope my tummy stays strong!!
Crossing the border was quite easy, it took around an hour for everyone to be departed from Tanzania and got their Visas for Malawi but it all seemed to go smoothly. Greg had organised a dude to come onto the bus to exchange all our Tanzanian Shillings to Malawi kwache and negotiated the best exchange rate!
Malawi's poverty is much greater that both Kenya and Tanzania, you could notice this from the first 10minutes of being in the country. It's known as the warm heart of Africa as the people are so friendly though. Lake Malawi consists of a third of the country and the population basically make their living off the land or the fish in the lake. At the sides of the roads you can see water wells that have been installed by charity organisations for the houses in that area, like what you see on tv adverts! The country hasn't had any fuel for 4months because of a political thing, therefore the supplies in the country are minimal.
So much for the warm heart of africa... we had been travelling in Malawi for around an hour before we were stopped by the police, as our driver was interrogated about his licence and insurance documents! This happens quite a lot in Africa, everyday we're stopped a few times but this time they took our tour guide away to the police station. We followed, and eventually they realised our driver, overall they held us up for a good 45mins. It wasn't Chris or Greg's fault, the police just didn't understand the paper work. So eventually we were back on the road. The scenery in Malawi is amazing, I was already loving this country more than Tanzania.
So after 11 hours on the road we got to Chitimba campsite which was right on the lake side with spectacular scenery. We set up the tents, looking right down to the lake, the campsite was all on a beach so was camping on the white sand tonight.
I managed to charge my phone and camera at the bar tonight which was handy, and surprisingly this campsite had wifi!!!! But they didn't allow iphones to use the connection because they apparently drained all the signal :(
The heat was so intense here though, at dinner I was sweating buckets which was horrible. We had our meal prepared out of the truck again tonight, mince and ugali! Was pretty good. Thank goodness it cooled down a bit, and I had an early night after one drink at the bar, as absolutely shattered from sitting on the truck doing nothing all day hehe. I now have crazy kankles, both feet have swollen up and my ankles have completely disappeared! No idea why though....?!
I am also in preparation for tomorrow night...!! :) It sounds like its going to be a goooooood one xxx
