I got the greyhound bus to Noosa which Howard was also on so I sat talking to him. I arrived there before Adam did, even though he set off before me. When he got there I introduced him to Howard and we waited for the shuttle bus to come. The bus arrived and we got in. There were 14 of us altogether. First of all we went the supermarket to buy food for 3 days and alcohol. We bought a big meat pack to share and a bag of chips. We had 4 bottles of Adams wine left so he just bought a few beers and I got some sprite to make the wine taste nicer. It was about 20 minutes drive to the bush camp. We passed lots of tents and caravans on the way where people lived all year round. We then came to our camp. It is one of those places where your first impression is OH My God where the hell am I? But as time goes on you get used to it and it is OK. Adam didnt look too impressed to start with. We had a tour of the camp. For the first night we were sleeping in dorm rooms. The beds were like bunk hammocks rather than beds and you needed your sleeping bag. The toilets were long drop toilets, the showers were miles away and the kitchen was was a BBQ and 4 gas burners. There was a nice big area for a camp fire. The camp was right next to the Noosa River that we would be kayaking the next day. So we settled into the dorm and then hung out in the kitchen area.
The owners little boy was there. He had spotted our food box labeled Adam+Vicky and was looking for Adam as he was also called Adam. When he found him he followed himaround everywhereand was talking to him about some Japanese cartoon. It was quite cute really. After that we BBQ'ed our steaks and a sausage each and cooked some chips. Quite a lot of people were jealous of our dinner. It did look good! After dinner we spent some time getting to know the others. There were 5 Dutch lads called Sem, Daan, Mitch, Bob and Tim. Two Irish girls, two English girls and a Swiss couple. We started to play a card game but it was a really slow boring game so we abandoned it and spent most of the night sat around the camp fire chatting. That was until Adam challenged everyone to a dip in the river. Everyone else was sensible and refused but Adam still felt he had to make a point so in he went! In the pitch dark! Then he sat near the fire to get dry as the water was freezing. It was then bed time and time to try out the hammock style beds. They werent actually that bad once you were in them. I did need the loo in the middle of the night and woke Adam up to come with me as I didnt want to walk through the bush on my own. Bless him he came with me.
In the morning we had a briefing at 8am to tell us about the kayaking. It was a self guided trip up the river 5km and then across a lake another 2km to a nice little beach. There would be a small bar there where we could buy lunch if we wanted or take a packed lunch. We took the sandwiches and crisps we had bought at the supermarket. There were 3 people to a canoe so me and Adam went with the Dutch boy called Tim or by midday Timmy! We were told to stick together as a group so we did but had mini races against each other and kept connecting our canoes together to make a big one. Adam was really good at the kayaking. He sat at the back and was good at steering it and making it go really fast. Unfortunately he was also really good at scaring me by rocking the canoe so it almost tipped over but it didnt. He also kept threatening to roll the canoe, im sure he did it just to tease me on purpose. We made it to the lake and in some parts it was shallow enough to stand up and walk in. This was also quicker than kayaking.
We made it to the beach, it had taken about an hour and a half to get there. We pulled our canoes up the beach and flipped them over like we had been told to. We sat on the beach and had a little rest as it was very hot and we had worked hard. The boys decided to walk to find the pub and left us girls on the beach sunbathing. They were gone about an hour and came back with Goon!! We then had lunch and the boys climbed a tree on the beach. About an hour later we headed back, 7km back to the camp. To pass the time we sang songs. Most of them were army songs led by Adam where he would say something and we would repeat it.Then came quotes of movies such as Lock Stock, Snatch and Borat. Somehow it then progressed to Disney songs and I was so shocked that Adam knew all the words to the Lion King! That has to be one of my favourite memories of the kayaking trip, Adam singing "Be Prepared" at the top of his voice. We eventually made it back to the camp, however we werent the first canoe back so the Dutch boys were there waiting to capsize us! Great!! They succeeded just infront of the camp so I came out very wet indeed and minus my sunglasses. I managed to save everything else though.
Back at camp I had a shower and cooked dinner. It was much more lively around the campfire that evening as we had all got to know each other now and there were also some new ones starting the next day. I was drinking Adams not so nice wine and he was drinking his beers. Having said that we were still in bed quite early as we had started early. Bed this time was a tent, I was sharing with Adam but we had forgotten to get roll mats before the reception shut so all we had were our sleeping bags on the hard ground. It wasnt too bad for me as I kinda used Adam as a bit of a pillow, hehe. However I also discovered he snores really loud!!
So after a not so comfortable nights sleep we were up to go Kayaking again in the opposite direction. Todays trip was shorter at 5km. We were heading down the river this time towards the sea. We once again would cross a lake and stop at a small beach. This time we had a 5km walk across the land to the beach on the ocean side. From there we would be able to look across the sea and see Noosa. We set off about 9:30am and once again I was in a canoe with Adam and Timmy. About 10minutes into the trip Adam and Timmy decided they wanted to change places so Adam would be at the front and Timmy at the back. Well this also meant they both had to pass me in the middle. Adam went first despite me saying No, No, No! He managed to make it passed me by making me duck and practically sitting on my head. However Timmy did not do it quite as carefully as Adam and tipped the whole Kayak over! So everything including me ended up in the river. It took a while to get the kayak turned back over the right way but then it was full of water so we couldnt get back in. We had to swim dragging it behind us to the bank where we could empty it and start again. That was hard work as we were going against the current. Eventually we managed it and got back on our way. We were a lot behind the others now. Also it didnt work as well with Timmy in the back and Adam at the front. At the start of the lake there was a sand bank island so we stopped there and swapped back again. We named the Island "Timland." After a 5 minute rest we carried on across the lake and pulled our canoe up next to the others.
We got our towels and lunch and began the 5km walk to the main beach. We passed a few shops on the way but it was mainly bushland. When we arrived it was a lovely beach and there wernt many people around. We sunbathed for a little while before moving into the shade as it was too hot. Whilst we were there two cars attempted to come onto the beach and both of them got stuck. Each time our boys helped them to push it out. We had lunch and then a bus of school children showed up for a surfing lesson. We headed back to the kayaks and on the way passed some kangeroos at the side of the road. We also took advantage of the flushing toilets at the side of the road although it was a bit traumatic for me. Lets just say I sat on the toilet and did what I needed to do and when I stood up a massive big fat frog / toad splashed into the toilet! It scared the life out of me as I didnt know what it was to start with. It could have been a baby crocodile or snake that was gonna bite my bum!! I was impressed with myself that I didnt scream. We made it back to the kayaks and started our way back.
We were all tired and couldnt be bothered but we had to keep going. The lake was shallow in places again so there the boys got out and ran pushing the kayak while I sat in it. Excellent! We got back on the river and passed a fishing boat with a couple on. We were throwing a ball between kayaks and it fell short of one of the kayaks. One of the Dutch guys leaned to get it and tipped up their canoe, so it was now someone elses turn to sink their boat. It took another 10 minutes to get them all back in their boat. The couple were just about to come out in their speed boat to help us. We eventually made it back to the camp, very tired and wet.
That evening we once again spent around the campfire before going to bed inour tents, this time with roll mats. We werent leaving until 12pm so we could have a bit of a lay in. We also watched the film Hangover 2and had a nice cooked breakfast. The shuttle bus dropped us back in Noosa and after 3 nights in the bush we fancied treating ourselves to the Flashpackers (basically a posh backpackers).
When we got there, there werent any dorm rooms left so we had to upgrade to a private room. This was even more flash! We had our own TV, air conditioning, private patio area, bed side lamps and ensuite. It was more like a hotel room. Luxuary! Feeling pretty tired still from the kayaking we spent the afternoon watching the News and Kids programmes. We did venture out to find something to eat as we couldnt be bothered to cook what we had left. Whilst out we found a cinema so we went to watch a film. We chose the Warrior. It is about two brothers who enter a Thai kick boxing fight. Not very girly I know but it was a good film. We were also the only ones in the cinema!! After that we just went back to the hostel and went to bed.
