9am Me and Mark went to catch the bus to Townsville. Adam and Shona werent coming. It was a hot day but thankfully it was nice and cool on the bus. We arrived in Townsville at lunch time and went straight to the ferry terminal. The ferry took 20 minutes to cross over to Magnetic Island. We then had to catch a local bus to the Base hostel. The rooms there were like beach challets. It was very hot. There was a nice bar / restaurant area that overlooked the sea and a swimming pool. We settled into the room and went for our free welcome drink and dinner. I chose burger and chips. It was quite a big portion for a free meal. That evening I was really tired so just spent it in my room and went to sleep qite early as well.
The next day we had our free breakfast and it wasnt bread like other hostels, it was actually bacon and eggs! Wow! Mark wanted to feed the wild wallabies and then walk back on one of the trails. So we got the public bus to where the wallabies live and bought a bag of food for $2 from the shop, however Mark was really prepared and had a bag of carrots in his bag. The wallabies lived amongst the rocks and came out to get the food. They would eat from your hand but were still really cautious and wouldnt let you stroke them. They really liked the carrots. After that we began our walk. He hadnt told me it was uphill! It was also scorching hot which made it twice as hard. Having said that it wasnt too bad as it was only gradually up hill. It took about 3 hours to get from one side of the island to the other and there were some amazing views from the top.
That evening we had to buy dinner and I had lasagne. The nights entertainment was Boozy Bingo! It was $5 for 3 sheets and 4 rounds. The winner of round 1 won a jug of beer, 2nd round more free meals, 3rd round was a room upgrade and the 4th round was all the money from Bingo. On certain numbers you had certain things to do, like drink, shout things out or do actions. So it began and I actually won round 1 Yeah! However I dont like beer so the boys on my table had a treat. Unfortunately I didnt win any of the other rounds. The next day we went to the Koala Santuary. There we saw many animals and got to interact with a lot of them. We got to hold a black cockatiel and feed it seeds from our mouth. There was also a bearded dragon and a lizard thats tail looked the same as its head. We got to hold both of those. Then we went to the snake pit and I held a carpet python around my neck. It kept wriggling all over but I was fine, I wasnt scared at all. When Mark held it, it kept still as though it was asleep, he is the snake charmer.! (he keeps snakes at home). The last animal was a crocodile. It had a little bit of tape wraped around its mouth so it couldnt bite us. You could hold a koala as well but I didnt as ive done it before. On the way out we could feed the birds, the small green parrots called lorikeets. We got some bread soaked in honey in each hand and waited for them to come. When they did we had at least 20 birds on us at once. They were all up your arms, on your head and shoulders and clinging on where ever they could. It was quite an experience and were left with scratched arms to prove it.
We went back to the hostel and I had steak and chips for dinner. That night was ladies night so I took advantage of the free cocktails and had 8 glasses (they were only small&full of ice).
The next day Mark left on the morning bus but I had to wait for the night bus, so I just chilled out at the hostel. I sunbathed on the beach, something Mark hadnt let me do and went on the internet. The evening came and I caught the local bus to the ferry terminal to get the ferry back to Townsville. I then had 2 hours to wait for my bus to Cairns but it was late and I ended up waiting for about 4 hours for it. It eventually turned up at 1:45am and Adam was on the bus as he had come from Airlie Beach. So I sat next to him and used him as a pillow for most of the journey, until he used me as one. We arrived in Cairns at 7am.
