Yangshuo - Population: 300,000 Province: Guangxi Zhuang Located: Li River
17 & 18/11 - We stayed somewhere overnight, but very sorry, its been a while as I haven't updated the log and cant remember where, but all I can remember is that whilst travelling to the train station on the morning of the 18th I was wasnt feeling very well. We had to catch an overnight train to Guilin. This was the worst journey I've ever had, it was the journey from hell for me. I decided to get sick and felt like I was going to die. I wasn't sure what end my bodily fluids were going to come out...sorry...I was sick...thanks to everyone for looking after me...and for Graham for making me chuckle even though I was throwing up over his cardboard shoes...how to sort out the men from the boys!! I couldn't wait to get off the train...early start. George and Huang carried my bags for me and we had a 1.5 hour coach ride to Yangshuo from Guilin...where Huang managed to get me a temporary room to crash out in whilst they all went for breakfast.
19/11 - So whilst everyone was enjoying the scenery and various activities which I was so looking forward to, I was taking a trip to the hospital to see what was wrong as I couldn't keep anything down or in and hadn't eaten for 2 days. So Huang took me to the hospital on his moped which was a sight in itself. All I can say is thank god I had Huang there to help me and to intepret as no one spoke a word of English. I wont go into it too much but lets just say he used his influence and some cash to get me seen straight away. I had to have all sorts of tests and felt very embarrassed when being asked questions by the doctor and having Huang intepret for me...managed to have a laugh about it afterwards! Turned out I had food poisening. Can you blooming believe it...the whole of the trip I've been eating mainly vegy food, the one night I really fancy a chicken burger, as all the others have been eating KFC, thought I'd give it a go....and I go and get food poisening...whats the chances of that?!! So 1,000 concoction of pills later and instructions in English from Huang back to the hotel for more rest and recuperation.
I missed the bike ride through the surrounding countryside which I was told was pretty fantastic scenery, I entrusted George with my camera and I'm quite impressed with the photos he took! I also missed the cormorant fishing to name but a few. I was really gutted I missed it all, but really needed to rest and build up my strength again. We stayed in a lovely Guesthouse called Lisa's Mountain View which helped! Thanks Gen for keeping me company!
I managed to get out and about a couple of times and found the town of Yangshuo very pretty and felt comfortable walking around on my own. Lots of little shops and cafes with the amazing backdrop of the limestone karst mountains.
We had a free day the next day as we were not catching the overnight train until 8pm to HongKong so did some shopping and sent a parcel home from the postoffice. We could write a book on the different post offices we have experienced along the way, all so different from each other!
