Nice early start today - blue sky so we were excited about our trip to Milford Sound! Our tour left the campsite at 7:45 - there were only 3 other people on the tour so a nice small group! The drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound takes about 2 hours, but it is through the most beautiful scenary! Our tour provided us with lunch boxes - how cute! Our first stop was at the mirror lakes - the water reflects the mountains above perfectly! They were really impressive. Next we stopped off at a really pretty lake - Lake Gunn - a very serene spot. The road continued to be beautiful - we stopped at the enterance to a really long one way tunnel - the traffic lights only change every 15minutes. There was the remains of a landslide just by the side of the tunnel - very odd to see such a thick area of snow in the sun! The ferry ride was gorgeous - we saw some amazing waterfalls and the mountains were stunning. The ferry sailed right under the first waterfall - they got to people to collect water from the falls in glasses which we drank after - just as we were pulling away from directly under the water we saw a raindow in the rain. We saw New Zealand fur seals sun bathing on a rock, and on the way towards the under water aquarium we had the amazing chance of seeing dolphins! They swam along the front of the ferry for about 10minutes, was amazing see -they were massive compared to any dolphins ive seen before - couldnt stop smiling when we were watching them jumping and playing. The second waterfall the boat went under soaked us! Was very funny, and i did eventually run for cover in the boat - but amazing to stand looking at the waterfall cascading down onto us. On the bus ride home we stopped to see Kea parrots - so cute and really quite brave with humans! We had a short walk over a tiny bridge and through the bush - over a beautiful clear blue river. A really gorgeous day.
