Today we left early at 7:30 fo rthe Vatican City due to the public transport strike. We went in and had a private tour with a guy from NZ who kept referring to Jesus Christ as JC. We first walked through the garden with a giant pine cone and a golden globe type thing (I really need to find out theproper names of these things). In the garden is where he gave us an overview of what we would see inside the Sistine Chapel and the background to the artists that did alot of the work.
We then went to Musei Vaticani and saw cool sculptures and works by Rafael etc. There are also ceilings which don't really have carvings on them, but are painted in a way that it looks 3D, very cool. After that we went to the Sistine Chapel and saw Michaelangelos paintings, managed to sneak a photo in too. Its funny becuase you area supposed to be silent in there but every few minutes a loud broadcast would come one telling us to pretty much be quiet and do not take photos.
After that we went towards St Peters Basilica and wanted to go in but our shorts were too short. We will be back in Rome though so we will probably go back. After that we met back up with Dario (our TopDeck tour guide) and we walked (due to strike) to: Piazza di Popolo, Piazza di Spanga, Trevi Fountain (where I made a wish by throwing a coin over my left shoulder with m left hand), Pantheon, Monumento Emmanuele (wedding cake which we already saw the day before), Roman Forum and the Colloseum.
After Pantheon we stopped for lunch at a small Pizzeria and I had gelato, 2 big scoops of ananas (pinapple) and frutti di bosco (forest fruits). SOOO good but made me feel a little sick after haha. After the Colloseum, me, J and C went in to see the place itself and it is very impressive. Cheryll actually fell asleep in the collosuem itself too haha.
Today really was a bit of a pain with no public transport. We walked from 8 to 6pm with a lunch break only. ALl our feets were so tired. We came back to hotel at 7 and then had dinner with Dario, Clair, Nicky and Luke. Very nice meal and the wine was very good, both red and white. Tried Bruschetta with buffalo mozzerlla and pomodoro (tomato) too. Yum yum. After dinner we went back to hotel and had a reasonably early night.
