We had a lazy get up today. Did some washing before heading out.Phew it is hot even at 10am. We walked down into the town and hopped on the tram to take us out to 'Old Town' San Diego.
At the other end we started with a walk through Presidio park. Then we mosied into the old town. This is the original Mexican infuenced area of the city. It has whitewashed buildings with red tile roofs.
It was a litle trip back in time. Although most of the buildings are now restaurants and shops it still felt a bit wild west. We came across the Blacksmiths shop. It was like a huge garden shed with thousands of different tools and a big bellow fed brazier. The smithy was a nice chap who was making some hinges for the cabinet maker. We had a chat about 'case hardening' and 'tempering' metal. Reminded me of metalwork class at school. Apart from the fact he didnt call me an idiot and throw a hammer at me like my teacher!!
The midday sun was high and hot so a beer was required. Set 'em up bartender. A long cold beer in the shade was just right. We had a slow walk around the old town before catching the tram back to the gaslamp quarter. Lunch was next on the agenda.
After lunch we walked out the top end of town to Balboa Park. It sits on a hill top. In essence it is a large park with lots of individually themed museums. There is an aviation, a sports, a motor car an art etc etc. All the buildings are Spanish 'castillo' style. they are very ornate and imposing.
Well I'm back in the motel now. It's been a scorcher. It's time to get scrubbed up and go for dinner. San Diego has been an interesting 2 days. Tomorrow we are heading to Los Angeles for 2 days and the final part of our North American leg of the journey.
